Sending Official AP Scores before Decision

Do colleges need official AP Scores to make their decisions? Some universities ask students to self-report. Others require official reports. For those that want official ones, do they need them for decisions, or only to consider course exemption for the accepted student? In other words, can I hold off on sending my official AP Scores until they make their decision, and I make mine to go there? In particular, the UC application asks for AP Scores, and reminds me that I have to report official ones from College Board. Do I need to do that before they review my application?

It is my understanding that UCs do not use your inputted AP scores in their decision. However, once you’ve been accepted, you do need to send your official AP scores to the campus you’re attending.
