I was just wondering if it's acceptable to send a research paper instead of a research abstract to UChicago, because the research paper itself speaks much more about my work than the abstract does.

How long is the paper? Did you get it published somewhere? Who has reviewed it?

I think you should send both. JMHO.

It was only 10 pages, not published yet.

Just send the abstract- you can beef it up a little from its original state to be more descriptive if you need to. The whole paper would simply be too long. Think of it this way: it’s the same reason art/music/drama students will send only a snippet of their concerto or play… obviously watching or listening to the whole thing is ideal, but there simply isn’t enough time to go through everything, so you’re better off sending a concise description of the research rather than the whole paper.

The ability to summarize - and summarize well - is a useful life skill. Send the abstract. If you send a ten-page paper, the chance that someone will read through the entire paper start to finish is very slim. It’s like what gracello says: there’s simply not enough time, especially with so many applications coming in through the door.
