Sending SAT II in Jan: Bad idea?

Hello,

I have a question. I have a decent SAT I and SAT II Lit score. I have a not-so-decent SAT II Math 2 score (690) that I do not want to send to colleges that allow score choice. I'm retaking the Math test in January and I'll send that score (yes, I know I'll have to send it blindly).

I know colleges accept January scores, but is it wise, sending only one SAT II right now and the other in Jan? Will the colleges not even consider/look at my app till is 'complete', i.e. both my SAT II scores are received by them (in Feb, I guess)? And will this put me at a disadvantage, them not looking at my app till it is 'complete'?

When you say you know colleges accept Jan test scores, have you actually checked the ones to which you are applying? Though there are many that accept Jan tests, there are also many that require all testing to be completed by Dec.

If the college actually requires SAT subject tests, then your application will not be reviewed by those who actually determine admission until there are two such test scores in your file, and thus you could be reviewed later than others. Difficult to determine if that creates any real disadvantage.

Yes, I have checked, and they accept scores from the January testing date.
And yes, the colleges REQUIRE two SAT Subject Tests.
Can anybody tell me if there is a disadvantage in my app being reviewed late?
How does it weigh against the disadvantage that sending my bad score might create for me?

Agreed. Anything you and I would ascribe to it would only be guessing and/or paranoia. Do what you need to do.

So, there is no concrete evidence of it creating a disadvantage, right?

This is a little urgent, so BUMP!

From what I know, you are perfectly fine.

^What is fine? Me sending only one score now and the other later?

I’m saying your application will be equally reviewed and you sending in scores late will not have any effect in admission decision

^Are you sure?

What are your schools that require 2 subject tests?

Dartmouth, Brown, Duke, Amherst, Wesleyan, Barnard, Rice…

“For regular decision applicants, the results of January testing may not reach us in time to be considered.” - Amherst

https://www.amherst.edu/admission/apply/firstyear/node/28869</a></p>

Rice too.

<a href=“Office of Admission | Rice University”>Office of Admission | Rice University;

Beyond that I think it’s speculation as to what goes on in admissions offices. If you decide to send to all, make it clear that you are retaking in January.

I’d actually hold off on Dartmouth.

LATE EDIT:

Must send for Duke:

[Checklist & Deadlines - Duke Admissions](Apply - Duke Undergraduate Admissions)

Encouraged at Brown:

“Brown will consider up to the November SAT test for Early Decision and the January SAT test for Regular Decision…However, we encourage students to have at least one set of scores in our office by the appropriate application deadline”

[First-Year Applicants | Undergraduate Admission](<a href=“Undergraduate Admission | Brown University”>Undergraduate Admission | Brown University)

So at most Brown, Dartmouth, Barnard and Wesleyan don’t get the 690. At minimum, don’t send to Dartmouth.

Another thing to keep in mind is that, if money is an issue and a school will take Jan scores, self-report the scores you have now on your common app, but wait until Jan to submit them-- you have four free score reports (that will send all of your scores) when you take the test, instead of paying to send them now and having them sent again in Jan.

^I have emailed these colleges, some say that all scores can be sent in Jan, others want current scores to be sent now.

Personally I waited until I received my Subject test scores online in January before sending them-- didn’t even do the immediate sending. The rest of my application was finished. I emailed admissions at a number of top schools and they did not care at all. In my experience, they really just want your SAT I by the deadline.

^These were colleges that required SAT Subject Tests?

Yes. Rice, Princeton, and Cornell, among several others who recommended them.

I wouldn’t use it as a rule but they did not care that I sent mine in January.

“Personally I waited until I received my Subject test scores online in January before sending them-- didn’t even do the immediate sending”

OP’s scores will not be available until February and cannot wait to send them. Keep in mind that some of these schools allow ACT or SAT I + 2 SAT subjects. Duke allows SAT + ACT but not the ACT alone. Dartmouth requires 2 subjects tests, and thus the scores are more important at Dartmouth than elsewhere.
