Sending SAT scores?

I don't understand the concept behind the option of sending SAT scores on the collegeboard website for free to schools you're interested in. When we eventually send in our applications and shell out the application fee, doesn't that cover the standardized testing scores? Unless sending scores for free ahead of time lowers the application fee, why even have this option?

Can someone explain this to me?

The application fee goes to the individual colleges to process your application. The fee to send SAT scores goes to the Collegeboard, a separate organization. They are two separate fees, that both need to be paid.

The only benefit of sending scores is to save the cost of sending them later. Personally, I don't send them. I'd rather eat the cost later and be able to select which of my scores are seen, personally.

don't waste the 4 free sends. if you score better next time you could always send the scores again and the schools will look at the better scores.
