Since both SAT and ACT scores are listed on my high school transcript, do I have to send official scores for both to every school I apply to? Or is just sending one of the two okay? Since i'm applying to 9 schools, I'd really prefer not to have to pay for 18 score reports....

Yes, you most likely do. The first four are free if you send them when you take the test, though.

Some schools (perhaps most) will not accept the transcript score and want them sent directly. You'll have to investigate each one.

As far as whether you need to send both SAT and ACT scores, that depends.

You'll obviously need to send SAT scores to schools that require SAT II's/subject tests, even if your ACT score is comparably better than your SAT I. And if your ACT score is better, you should probably send it also because colleges will use the higher of the two scores and then plug in the SAT subject test scores.

For schools that don't require SAT II/subject tests, it's your choice -- send either ACT or SAT, whichever is better, unless the school specifically requires one or the other or has stated a preference. (Cal Poly SLO, for example, prefers ACT over SAT but will accept either).

actually i have the exact same question, and i was about to start a new thread when i read this one.

I took the ACT, SAT, and SATIIs. My ACT score was considerably higher than my SATs, but all the scores show up on my transcript. The app. I am filling out now is for a school that only requires either the ACT or SATI (SATIIs optional, but not required). So, if I report all the scores on my application (I don't want to look like I'm hiding anything since they all show up on my transcript anyway), is it still okay to only forward on the official ACT scores, and not the SAT scores?? I really can't afford to send all of them, and I wouldn't mind if they didn't consider the SAT scores anyway, since they're not that great. Is it okay to only send the ACT scores? thanks

bump... anyone out there who can help out me and starysky?? thanks

Keeping in mind that this is just my opinion... I don't see any reason why you need to send the SAT scores if the subject tests are truly "optional." Some schools "recommend" them, some don't even mention them, some say they will "consider" them if you send them but they are not "required." Since they will see that you took the tests anyway, as long as they are optional, you don't need to pay more money to send them the score report. If they are "recommended", then you should send them. If they will "consider" them, then you should send them if the subject test scores are good and would enhance your application -- I haven't found a school yet that accepts either ACT or SAT that doesn't just ignore the lower of the two scores if you send both.

FWIW, I really wish schools would not "recommend" things. Either something is required or it's not. Let's not play games. Seniors have enough to do without playing guessing games, don't you think?

haha... i agree. as if college apps. aren't frustrating and confusing enough, they have to throw in that "recommended" but not required part. It just puts all us Seniors in agony over, "will they hold it against me if I don't send it??" I know what you mean. And thanks, 1down2togo, for your replies.
