I'm going to be a senior in the fall, and I'll be taking the ACT for the first time in September. I didn't list any colleges when I signed up because I wasn't sure how sending reports to colleges works. I know that colleges will only receive one ACT score and not all my past scores, but do I have to designate which schools I want to send my scores to before I actually get to see how well (or how horribly) I do on the test?

I'll probably only take the ACT for the last time in October if i totally bomb the September one, so I'll have one more score at most.

No, you can see your scores before you send them off. You order the score reports from ACT (see its web site for details). Check the dates -- you may have to sign up for the October test before you can find out online (the quickest way, but you have to pay) how you did on the September one.

You can send more than one set of scores. But if you don't specify colleges in advance (or have more colleges to send to than your free before-the-test allotment) you have to pay. Sending two sets of scores is simply twice as expensive. But the price is rather minimal, compared to the price of college. Heck, one average textbook is probably going to cost more than what it takes to send ACT scores.

If you put down the colleges when you sign up for the test, you get 4 free. If you wait until you see your scores and then send them, it costs about $8 per school per set of scores.
