I am curious as to how much could a dance tape, a vocal recording, or a portfolio of artwork can work towards your advantage when you are applying to say the college of arts and sciences at a school? I mean it is not like I am targeting for Juliard or any particular school of music or dance but colleges like DUKE and BOWDOIN ask you to send additional materials if you would like and thus ask for such things as a tape or portfolio. Thus, I am curious as to how much it can help you?
Thanks.

my S and i just went to an info session yesterday at cornell CAS and the assistant dean of admissions told us that they love to get supplements even if they are not related to the students intended major. he said it can show a passion that maybe isn't apparent in words

You need to check with the specific school. Some schools won't accept supplemental materials. Others require a tape if you want, for example, a music EC to be considered with your application.

some schools actually discourage it unless it's really compelling, like state-level or national-level sort of things. how true is that is anyone's guess.
