Sending Transcripts to NMC before NMSF results are out?

My son will likely make National Merit Semi-finalist this fall. Is it ok to go ahead and send his high school transcript (through end of Junior year) to the National Merit Corporation now? It would be way easier to ask for an additional transcript to be sent at the same time he is having transcripts sent to various universities he is applying to...plus it will be one less thing to take care of during the busy fall season.

I doubt they would accept it now–the transcripts are usually sent with the application for finalist–which includes an essay and recommendation. All of this is usually sent directly from the school to NM Corp. in October. They probably aren’t ready to take paperwork from someone who hasn’t officially been named a semifinalist yet. I would think they’d want to keep all parts of each application together. Just wait for it.

No…the transcript has to be sent with all the OTHER stuff the school sends with the NMSF packet. In the fall, your school will put together transcript and school recommendation with the NMSF paperwork and send it in. A lone transcript sent in now doesn’t help matters since the school would still have to do its part next fall…and send another transcript.

Thanks all. Y’all have been very helpful - as usual!

My son is homeschooled so we use a small independent accrediting service for his transcript. They are unfamiliar with national Merit so I will be walking them through the process in the fall. It’s a little intimidating - but from what I have read on this board it sounds like the folks at NMC are pretty helpful and just a phone call away. I will handle it one step at a time when the packet comes this fall!

GAMOM: One of my sons was a homeschooled NMF. (Another went to public school.) You will receive the notification/finalist application at home, so it will be up to you to provide the transcript with the other items. You will need to get an outside teacher reference for your son, so you might think about who you will use for this. (We had a little difficulty with this item, since we moved twice while our son was in high school). Feel free to PM me.
