Sending two deposits?

I was just curious if I would be allowed to send in deposits to two different schools. My mom and I wanted a little bit more time to see UChicago before I made a firm decision on USC, so would I be able to send in the deposit to USC and UChicago, and then for whatever school I did not choose I would simply lose the money on the deposit? I just wanted to make sure that was legal.

It’s called double-depositing, and it’s definitely not legal. Students are expected to signal their intent to enroll by depositing at only one school by today. You might have been able to buy yourself a few extra days had you called both admissions offices and explained the situation. You still might be able to, assuming someone’s answering the phones today.

Definitely not legal. If you had committed to a school and then been taken off of a wait-list at another school, then you could have backed out of the first one (and lost your deposit) to accept at the wait-listed school. Otherwise you need to commit to one or the other now- but only one. When is their deadline to accept?

I wish I would have known this earlier!! I sent in my deposit for USC yesterday morning, and I was about to send in my deposit for UChicago today, but I wanted to make sure what I was about to do was okay. So I’m pretty much going to USC by default then? RAWR!!!

^no, you can still send in ur UChicago deposit, and call USC to forfeit it. If it’s before may 1st, sometimes they agree to return the deposit (if they’re really nice)
but basically, you have to MAKE A DECISION.

If you have truly changed your mind and have decided you’d prefer to attend U of C, call the U of C admissions office on Monday morning, explain the situation, and ask if you can still accept their offer of admission. They’ll probably say yes. Then call the USC admissions office promptly and let them know you’ve changed your mind. It’s likely you can change your decision by acting promptly, but the time to buy time to mull it over has ended, and in any case you should definitely not double deposit. You risk having both offers of admission rescinded.

^ But I can’t call USC because their Office of Admissions is only open Monday-Friday. And I still wasn’t sure if I wanted to go to UChicago, I just wanted to be able to say yes or no, but now I don’t even have that option…I feel so dumb. I guess I thought you could do the same thing as waitlist students. Boo my stupidity.

It’s ok though. I probably would have gotten my acceptance to UChicago rescinded anyway because I’m not doing well in most of my classes. I am SO helping my children with this process when I get older!
