Sending Writing Samples to Top Schools

Hi, I was wondering how acceptable/common/beneficial it would be for me to send writing samples to some schools I'm applying to, and how I would go about that process if I decided to send them.

I know that college admissions officers have a lot of stuff to go through, but I feel sending some writing (mostly poetry btw) might help me stand out as an applicant. I have won a few state-wide awards for my work, so I know that it is not mediocre. However, if admissions officers are going to find the extra reading annoying, could the pieces actually detract from my overall application?

If I did want to send writing, would I just email it to the respective application office?

Severely confused,

I would e-mail the admissions office of the college and ask if they would care to see your work to be considered for admissions before you send anything. I have a website with my PR work that I e-mailed a college about, and they said to put the link in one of the short responses. However, I e-mailed another college and asked the same question but they said that they do not use portfolios in their admissions process so I won’t be sending them my link.

Hope that helps! Definitely it’s best to ask the school what the best way of sending your work in is. Good luck!

Submit was is requested. They don’t want to sort thru every applicants’ ideas of what makes them outstanding. Reams of newspaper clippings, videos, art work slides, A+ papers. When does it end? Should you decide? Or should the schools decide? Don’t do it.

IMO if you have the poetry awards on your application, which I’m guessing you do, then they will know you have talent in that area and there is no need to send additional stuff for admissions officers to read.
