Sending your SAT/ACT scores

I'm applying Early Decision to Northwestern, and I've already sent my scores there. I was planning to send my ACT scores and my SAT scores to other schools after I find out my NU decision; if I get in, there's no need for me to spend a couple hundred dollars sending my scores to schools I won't have to apply to. However, Rice sent me an email stating:

StotheK (<--- my name went here),
As you may know, Rice University requires all applicants to submit SAT scores with two SAT Subject Tests or to submit the ACT with Writing. We have no preference between these options. We will use the highest scores from any sitting on the SAT, and we will use the highest composite score you present on the ACT. Therefore, we require all applicants to submit all scores to Rice.
To date, we do not have all official standardized test scores for your application. If you have taken the SAT, SAT Subject Tests, or the ACT with Writing and elected to suppress the release of your scores, please release them now to ensure that you meet our application deadlines.

...what? I was assuming, since their regular decision application deadline is January 1st, that I could send my scores in any time before the first. This email is confusing me, aha. Should I send my scores to Rice right now? Also, I don't see an actual deadline for the sending of scores, just the last accepted ACT/SAT tests. Here's the schedule, for anyone who wants to look at that

Future Owls

Also, is this test score reception deadline prevalent among common app schools?

It sounded like you already submitted an application to Rice? Or have you sent in anything to indicate that you are applying to Rice?

I selected Rice as own of my common app schools but besides that, nothing.

I think that there is nothing to worry about. As long as you send the score in before the deadline, you should be fine. You can politely reply the email and say that you will be sending in your SAT score shortly along with your application and ask if if there is any problem with not getting the SAT in right at this moment.
