Of course, they can't be deplorable (A student dropping to a C average, for example), but how big a impact will 2nd semester senior grades have? Specifically, on getting in off the waitlist. Let's say, for ex, that I'm waitlisted at a couple of my top choices. Will great 2nd semester grades significantly help me, or will it not matter that much, since chances of getting off the waitlist are slim anyway.

I'll still definitely work hard 2nd sem, but I just want to know if I need to go as full out as I did for the first 7 semesters of high school?

Well when colleges waitlist you, I’m pretty sure we have to send in our second semester grades. My question is how important outstanding grades in this second semester (like going from an average A to an average A+) could help in getting in of the waitlist (Im on the boarderline I think for many schools.) Or is the chance of getting in off the waitlist so low that all the extra hard work wouldn’t be worth it anyway, speaking from purely admissions perspective? (Of course I’ll learn more, but I’m speaking from purely admissions)

My daughter was waitlisted at 2 top 20 schools and got off both of them. Her GC faxed over her interim 2nd semester grades, which were all A and A+, and I believe that’s why she got off the waitlist. She was rejected by all of her top choices, and she was preparing for transfer if she couldn’t get off the waitlist and she knew she needed stella 2nd semester grades. I also believe waitlists are ranked. One of our relatives’ daughter also got off 3 waitlists the same year, and all three were also T20.

True, true, true. They request the people on the top of the list first, then go down. If you think you’re a super borderline waitlist don’t even bother.
