Senior April Visits - THE Weekend or Other?

~Post Script~

I just discovered that many of my concerns have been explored at length in wjb's "Tales from the Transfer Front" thread. In trying to keep my reading manageable, I never read that particular thread ... oh, it's a thread about transfer students ... not relevant to me and D.

It is hugely relevant. Great thread ... lots of amazing perspective ... all about fit, campus cultures, and myriad intangible factors about what makes a particular college right (or not) for a particular student.

I've recently discussed this matter with my D and the last remaining due diligence item is getting a better handle on feel, fit, and campus cultures (we're assuming of course that her favorite colleges will do the only sensible thing -- and grace her with their acceptance letters). From this perspective, she is definitely leaning towards a sort of investigatory "normal night" overnight instead of the April "admitted students" events.

I'm in the camp that sometimes wonders how much of a handle you can get on "feel" with one overnight (or weekend), but, I think there is no question that you're likelier to get a better handle if it's not a part of an EVENT weekend.

Dude-
I understand what you mean here... but in print that doesn't look very pretty :)

If I make it to my 30th reunion in Poughkeepsie this summer (doubtful), I probably won't recognize the place....

JYM

Honest. I strained and strained looking at that one. Turned it sideways ... upside down ... inside out. Looked for anything offensive or "unpretty." Thought it passed the test. It was stupid -- to be sure. But I've never been one to avoid mega contortions, or stupidity, for even the most minimalist humor.

Anyway, no offense intended and sorry to have put you even remotely in the vicinity of something so "unpretty." My intent was the opposite -- just a throw-away, private "thank you" for all of your help with VC (which we loved in many ways, by the way, just not for her) and other things.

Hey Dude-
Absolutely no offense taken.. not to worry.. It's just that I know where I went to school... but others probably haven't "paid it no nevermind", as they say here in the south. And, your note reminded me of a picture I have of a friend from freshman year in which he was wearing an open buttondown shirt over a Vassar t-shirt. The buttondown covered the "V" and the final "AR", and it said A-S-S in big letters across his chest! (Great picture, BTW. Enlarged it to an 8x10 and gave it to his wife and kids when I saw them last year during the college tour visits).

Glad to have helped with the info on Vassar et al. As for the college overnight visits, I asked my son your question, as he's hosted lots of "prospies" this past year, both during the "regular" and the admitted students weekends. I think he gave me the diplomatic, politically correct answer, but what he said was that he thought both times to visit were about equal. He thought that there was more going on, and more for the prospies to do over and above the regular campus stuff on admitted students weekend, but the bigger thing in his mind is that the prospies were with a lot of students their own age, who would be their potential classmates the next year. Hence, they got to see if they liked the students who would be entering with them.

In contrast, on "regular" weekends, you get a "non - PR" (my term, not his) view of the school. But, you may be more influenced by whether or not you had a good host who took you around and showed you the ropes. Reminds me of how we reacted to good or bad student tourguides. I am not sure if this helps much. He did say that most prospies came Thurs-Sat. That way they got to sit in on a class or two and could check out the social life.

BTW, I must admit my total ignorance on this acronym... what is "ADOCH"???

If memory serves, it's Brown-speak for "A Day on College Hill" -- their EVENT.

And since memory isn't serving as well these days, I didn't remember that lovely Vassar word picture you painted ... I can see why you'd want to stay far away from that one.
