Senior College Shirt Day

Seniors - our school is considering designating a day where each senior wears a shirt, hoodie, or something from the college or university that they will be attending. Do any of your schools do something similar? There is a thought out there among some parents though that this may be a problem due to some of the seniors not getting into their first choice or not getting in anywhere at all, and we don't want to make anyone feel badly. So if your school announces or displays who is going where in a different (creative) way we would take those suggestions too!!! Thanks in advance for your response!

Yeah. Our school has a day like that during senior week!

I suggested a day like this in student government. I think it is an excellent idea. We also considered an ice cream party thing to go along with it...like after school or something.

We have a day like that. I think it's a great idea for some kids, but it didn't sit well with me. A lot of kids didn't have the finances to go to the school they wanted, didn't get in, and some may have even been planning to do a gap year, work, or go to community college. Those that are obsessed with college are already talking people's ears off about where they're going, and they're the people that would want most to parade around in their Harvard sweatshirts or whatever. I dunno. I feel like that day would make some people feel kind of crappy for various reasons, from the kids concerned everyone is going to the state uni - and seeing everyone in state uni sweatshirts! - to the ones embarassed they didn't get in to their top choice or aren't going to college at all.

We also have a chain link that stretches accross the cafeteria with seniors' names and where they're going to school.

My D's school has such a day (hoodie or sweatshirt day) in January, before most of the students know where they are going. That way people can wear sweatshirts from where they are going, where they want to go, whatever they have in their closet, or something else. They can also choose to wear one from the HS.

hmm...i think my school has something like this...but I really love the idea. Though people might be embarassed, etc-they will still have to answer numerous questions about "where are they going to college", etc...plus, I love non-uniform days :0

i think thats a pretty cool idea
i wish our school had something like that

I don't like that idea. Not everyone has the means or desire to go to college, and this leaves them out.

We print a big map in the center spread of the special senior issue of our school paper that shows where everyone is going to college. We also include community colleges, people who are joining the military, and any other plans people report (work, volunteering, gap years, etc.).

Yeah I don't like this idea at all, and I don't see what the point of it is. There are so many other fun options for spirit week or whatever you're doing, save the ten self conscious kids the embarassment.

My school doesn't have this. And I'm really glad we don't. If our administration sanctioned such shameless bragging, I'd leave. That said, 25%ish of my class goes to Ivies every year. And another 10 to 15% go to Georgetown, top LACs, or top UCs. If you want people to know where you're going, just tell them.

Besides, you know when someone has gotten into a college because they buy a new sweatshirt.

Yeah, I think it's a bit obnoxious. Unless you got to a prep school or something.

It would be cool. Although about 50 percent of our school usually goes to community college. The other half goes to UCs, States, and Private unis. I think were sending a few to Stanford this year :)

We have that in the middle of May. I think it's great. I don't want to ask 650 seniors where they are going to school. I ask my friends, but I don't ask the random guy in my ap bio class. College shirt days just makes it so that you can walk by someone and be like, "Oh... he's going to U of I"

Only half the seniors participate anyways, so it isn't like we assume you aren't going to college if you don't wear one.

Aren't there seniors not going to college though? Wouldn't they feel really alienated? Just sayin'.

yeah. what about kids who have to work for their families, who cant pay for college, who take a year off, who are embarrased by their college for whatever reason.
i personally just really dont like the idea.

Yeah, our school does that during Senior Week. But the shirts they wear are mostly for UT and the local state uni and the occasional Vandy shirt. Oodles of variety, I tell you.

my school is really small and they have a bulletin board where they put everyones acceptances under their names..... its like on display in the main hall which is really annoying because everyone is constantly checking it and it has turned the whole admissions process into a competition.
