Senior Confused About Civil Engineering in the UC Colleges?

I want to apply to all the UC's but I'm not sure if they all have Civil Engineering? I want to major in Civil Engineering, but if the UC's don't have Civil Engineering does that mean I shouldn't apply there? Or should I think of alternate majors... ?

Berk, LA, D, and I have general Civil Engineering.
SD has structural engineering, which is a subset of Civil engineering only.

If the UCs don’t have Civ E, you should still apply there with an alt. major because many students change their majors over the course of college. But if you are sure about your Civ E major, pick one of the UCs above that have Civ E as a major.

Many people who apply to the UC schools for engineering also apply to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. Cal Poly is not part of the UC system, but it offers equally low in-state tuition, and has admissions standards comparable to many UCs. Cal Poly has a strong civil engineering program.

what would be a good alternate major to civil engineering?

mechanical or electrical?

Industrial or mechanical. Unless you would be interested in working with electrical systems on commuter or light right rail lines.

do mechanical engineers help contribute to the house construction process. Do they help out with building skyscrapers and stuff?

Mechnical engineers can work as structual engineers through additional study or work on the mechanics of the individual members. Many different fields colaberate in the design process of large construction. Residential housing is dominated by architects and construction managers.

because my personal essay kind of leans toward me aspiring to be a civil engineer (love building designing buildings)

so does that kind of demonstrate mechanical engineering more than electrical. i want to get into at least one mid tier UC, and don’t want to count out that UC just because it doesn’t have Civil Engineering…

If you express that you’d like to design buildings, that demonstrates interest in civil engineering, NOT mechanical.

the thing is that my alternate major is mechanical engineering. i don’t want to NOT apply to UC Santa Barbara just because it doesn’t have civil engineering.

I want to get into any UC. so I might change my essay a little bit, but I thought mechanical engineering had a little bit to do with buildings?

Well, you could design the HVAC system in a building, but that’s not designing THE building.

oh… would it be weird if I wrote a essay about wanting become a civil engineer but applied as a mechanical engineer? would they factor that into the admission process?
