senior cornell here, ask away

current senior of cornell, willing to answer questions people have about things

not going to do the whole chance thing

better if ask unique questions but whatever

How is the Language house resident program? What have you heard about it? Is it fun? XD

dorms:

how big?
dorm mate relationship?
Choosing dorm?
food?

Cost:

If ok- how much debt are you in?
how did FA help you?

Work:

Are you getting out with a job?
Will you continue your studies?
You feel Cornell has help you land a job?

Internships?

I know is a lot. Thanks in advance!

I can answer a few of those:

I left with $62,000 of debt (that includes the interest). It roughly equates to a $650/month payment…but I’m managing that well.

I received about $5,000 a year in grant aid from Cornell and had a modest outside scholarship. The rest of my costs were covered with federal and private loans.

Obviously…I was at Cornell before the new FA policies were instituted :)

Yes…I left Cornell with an employment offer.

The good lord willing…I will be entering Tulane Med in 2010…I’m taking a rather convoluted path…hahaha

Nope…I found this job through a private contact.

achu, as a cornell alum, I appreciate that you are willing to help out, but please try not to be so negative when answering these questions like you were in some of your recent posts about Greek life and campus food. Try to answer with facts and not just opinions, thanks.

wow lots so fast, haha, ill start with the first question

languge house, i think i know where it is, i heard those words once or twice, no nothing about it,

dorms:

how big? depends on the dorm, more specific question needed, but basically u generally dont have a choice so dont worry about it
dorm mate relationship? never had a roommate, hallmates good
Choosing dorm? no choice, usually
food? good on north, bad on west, hours arent ideal in my opinion, again first year not much choice so dont worry abou tit

Cost:

If ok- how much debt are you in? answering more cornell life stuff
how did FA help you?

Work:

Are you getting out with a job? cornell engineering senior, no but i have other things going and again im more about asnwering college life stuff
Will you continue your studies? maybe
You feel Cornell has help you land a job? no

Internships? none but i had other thigns going on

I know is a lot. Thanks in advance!

cornelli 2008 im not an alumn, and facts are what you read on the websites, i thought people here would like opinions

and if they sound negative, well sorry theyre just my opinions/experience with it all, not saying anything false, doing that i agree would be bad

and cornelli 2008, are you some kind of moderator for this website? do i have to worry about sharing my opinion?

everybody should know its just my experience i talk about, i dont know anybody elses experience but my own,

and thought ppl would like to hear about my experiences at cornell

(experiences at cornell, both good and bad and in between)

i dont say anything but my opinions and truths, im not going to lie/pretty things up im not a marketer for cornell or anything

How much free time do you have per week? Is student organizations and frats active on campus? How safe do you feel on campus?

safe on campus, 99.999% im a guy if that makes a difference

free time per week, im going to average it out for all the years (more free time freshman yr)

and going to say roughly ok something like friday 5pm onwards, saturday, sunday mornings is something like the amount of time i had free per week, generally, some times it would be a lot less sometimes little more, usually less, but i can see this varying greatly by major

not sure what you mean by are student orgs and frats active on campus?

i remember when i was pre cornell and wondered about these things, but honestly in a matter of weeks or less most of these questions go away fast, haha, but i understand ur curiosity, but to me first reaction is initially like now theyre like, really this is what they wanna ask? lol, dont wonder about the deeper questions, quesitons about everday life, etc, lol

whatever though ill answer whatever

What would you say is a good amt of credits to take 1st semester? I’m a transfer, so it will be my sophomore year next year. I’m currently taking 17 credits at my current school…what would you say is the avg for most students? (I will be a COMM major if that helps)

i dont know for certiain what is typical for non engineers, but i think the number is roughly 15credits per semester, obvi it depends on the courses and what you can handle

i dont know anything about how transfers find the change in workload

i have friends who take 12 and some who take 24, i would just plan to take one more than you think, that way you can drop it up to like 7 weeks in, (easier to see if its too much rather than if its too little in my opinion)

youll have a much better idea i imagine too in the first week or so when you see what each course u take involves(some have little work outside class, some have tonnes, usually u find out when you see the syllabus, i imagine u know this type of thing from freshman year in any college)

How many classes total did u actually enjoy? If you can, list the classes and the professor and an explaination of why you enjoyed it.

well i never really had any choices in the classes i took due to the curriculum/req for graduation, and while some times in some days i would enjoy some parts of classes, on the whole as a course, i would say i “enjoyed” 2 or less courses i took

by enjoy i am htinking like, at the end of the course i look back and say was that enjoyable or not, and so yeah 2 or probably less courses i enjoyed

i dont have specific two in mind because i dont want to think about all the courses ive taken right now, lol, friday end of the day i want to minimize thinking/am lazy

Hey achu,

Do you find Cornell to be competitive? I guess there’s always a degree of competition between good students, but does it get overwhelming and annoying? I hear my best friend comparing Dartmouth and Cornell, and the biggest difference she lists is how cut-throat Cornell is and how friendly Dartmouth is.

you’re right, you should be able to state your opinion, but your answers to questions are often negative and not backed up with details and examples. And you often state your opinions like they ARE facts. Just stating that west campus food is “bad” is really not an appropriate answer. Food on west campus isn’t as great as north campus in my opinion, but I wouldn’t say it was bad at all.

Additionally, your information about Greek life is offensive…

“…but how they do it, dont let others in, dont share, alienate ppl, talking as if theyre celebrities, getting all the good intramurals stuff/seasons, is total **** and that makes them jerks”

For one thing, intramurals makes their own schedules completely, and appreciates all the “business” they get from greek organizations. They do not give the greek organizations the better seasons, there just isn’t as much interest from non-greek teams sometimes. You shouldn’t state these things as facts because they are not.

I guess I should rephrase what I meant. If you want to answer questions about Cornell, please present facts as facts and opinions as opinions. A lot of high school students can be very easily dissuaded by a negative opinion that offers no real details. If you only like a particular type of food, for example, and on west campus, they do not serve that type of food, then of course you might think the food on west campus is bad. However, the person reading your response might think that all of the food is actually terrible when that is simple not the case.

courses itook would have been very/far more enjoyable if i didnt have to worry about the stresses of trying to past what i thought were ridiculous tests
