Senior Course Load

Hey guys,

I'm having trouble deciding what my senior course load should be like and school is starting in a few days so I need to act fast. I'll be applying to UF soon but I don't want them to think my senior year was an easy way out or whatever.

My school has 7 periods but I started dual enrollment this summer and for senior year I was thinking:

French 4, PC Support 3, AP Calc BC, AP Bio, AP Lit, and 6 college classes (3 in the fall, 3 in the spring) so I would always have 8 classes throughout the year.

But then I started realizing that this would probably be too much to handle cause the teachers here are unfair and cruel, lol.

So now I'm thinking:

French 4, PC Support 3, AP Stats, AP Bio, and then 6 college classes (one of them being the equivalent to AP Lit) ((Although I already get credit for AP Lit at UF because of what I scored on the AP Lang Exam. Nonetheless, it is still mandatory to take it at my school to graduate).

So my question is if I take the 2nd schedule does it look too weak or should I stick to the first schedule?

The main school I plan to apply to is UF. I have like a 3.96 unweighted GPA. And SAT scores should be in the 2030 range. I have also taken 5 AP classes thus far.

Make sure you also have some legitimate Extra-Curricular activities, UF likes to see strong academics but they love seeing people who can divide up their time effectively among different activities even more.

Also, if UF is going to be your main choice, make sure you make that apparent in whatever essay you write because they like to know if you’re serious about going there (They sometimes don’t accept really strong applicants because they think the student will go to a bigger/stronger institution over them.)

I had a 3.5 unweighted GPA,a 1950 SAT score, and no dual enrollment (but I was in IB), and I got accepted to UF. The key is to make sure you look pretty good in all areas of the application (EC, Academics, Essay, Community Service) in order to increase your odds of getting accepted.

To answer your question: Your second schedule looks fine, as long as you maintain decent grades and join a club (or if you’re already in a club/sport, stay in it).

as long as you dont get multiple C’s or D’s and below, take the hardest schedule you can.

senior grades are not considered in admission, but extremely poor grades can cause it to be revoked. your senior courses are considered, however. that means you can afford to take classes you wont get an A to challenge yourself (and more importantly, get out of the way so you dont have to take in college).

Yea I don’t have many extra curriculars so that’s why I’m kind of worried…I’m also applying to the summer term and not fall just to be on the safe side lol.

So is the 2nd schedule good? It would look like this (for fall): French 4, PC Support 3, AP Bio, AP Lit, and DE classes would be Economics, Philosophy, and Geography. And then 3 different classes in the spring (one being Freshman Comp II).

And also, I was looking at the classes offered at UF, it says that Philosophy is not offered but says its 3 credits. Will they accept my credit from Valencia Community College? Or should I drop that Philosophy class and take another Humanities class?

UF accepts transfer credits (I’m pretty sure this is how it was…) as long as the prefix (ex. PHI) and the last digit or digits of the course number are the same. (like PHI1001 at VCC would be equal to something like PHI2031 or whatever…)

I took dual enrollment at FSCJ, and the course numbers corresponded with those at UF. It just depends what you’re taking, I guess.

Also, I know for some of the credit I got for AP/IB exams, there wasn’t a legitimate “class” at UF that I got credit for (for example, I got FRE2200-Intermediate French I, and FRE0301-which isn’t a real class, from my 4 on AP French Language). I still got 6 credits, however.

Is your French 4 class an AP class?

Yea the course at VCC is called PHI2010 and its called the same exact thing at UF, but UF says it doesn’t offer that course but it still says its 3 credits. So does it transfer?

Na, my French 4 isn’t AP cause my other French 3 classmates didnt want AP so the teacher made it just French 4 -_-

It should still transfer as credit, even if there isn’t a course. Like I said, some of my credit wasn’t toward a legit UF course…but I still have 42 credits on my transcript.

And can you elect to take the AP? I only say that because it wasn’t too too hard and if you want to continue with French in college, it really helps.

Oh okay sounds good. Where did your 42 credits come from? DE and AP?

Na I dont plan to continue French. I just did it in high school cause I liked it. We had to vote if we wanted AP cause there was only one slot.

6 came from DE, the rest were from AP and IB.

Ohh. Damn I don’t know what to do. I’m gonna talk to my guidance counselor tomorrow. Also on the UF website it says that a student with 12 or more credits from a college following graduation (dual enrollment) has to apply as a transfer and not freshman. Does this apply to me?

Sounds good

I don’t think so? I think that means someone who like graduated, then took college classes? I’m not 100% sure.

I have 66 credits from DE, but I was enrolled in high school during my college classes. I applied as FTIC and am going this fall. DE done in high school shouldn’t make you a transfer (unless you have 90 credits or something).

@A Genius
My second schedule sounds good?

@UF2014@mathsciencedude
Yea I think they just worded it weird on the website so I’ll still apply as a freshman.

How can you have 66 DE credits? I mean like isnt DE only for General Education? I’m having trouble picking DE classes cause I dont know how theyre supposed to be. Is Gen Ed for UF the same for every freshman or does it depend on thr major? Cause I was looking at Computer Engineer and it says Gen Ed is different. I just dont see how you can have 66 credits without overlapping the requirements? Where do the left over credits go?

Thanks!

A lot of my credits are in my major of study (math and physics). Maybe your HS counselor told you it was only for Gen Ed, or your doing your DE at a CC, which may make a difference (I have no idea). It is true that I have a ton of non-Gen Ed that do not apply to anything since I changed my major path from Biology/Chemistry, so Orgo and Microbiology don’t mean much to UF.
