“Senior Finds Error in Supercollider Algorithm” (news item)

Senior finds error in supercollider algorithm - The Daily Princetonian

“Xiaohang Quan ’09 was working on her senior thesis when she found a miscalculation in the hardware of the world’s largest particle accelerator.

Quan, a physics concentrator, traveled to Geneva, Switzerland, last week with physics professors Christopher Tully GS ’98, Jim Olsen and Daniel Marlow for the annual meeting of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). This year, however, they also came to discuss Quan’s discovery with the designers of the hardware for the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment, which, as part of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), has the potential to revolutionize particle physics….”

The Princeton senior thesis is a major part of every graduate’s experience. As in the case of Ziaohang Quan, it sometimes results in a major discovery and/or publication. For more about the thesis see:

^ way to spell her name wrong in your last paragraph right after copy+pasting a quote from the article with her name in it…

I’m sorry. You’re absolutely right. My apologies to Xiaohang Quan and congratulations on her wonderful accomplishment!

woah… That’s incredible! I’m awed at the impact her thesis could have.

The senior thesis, required of everyone, is a huge differentiator for Princeton. It is the other side to the eating clubs etc. IMO it doesn’t get talked about enough on these boards.

Maybe that’s why the Hadron Collider crapped out after it shot like 2 particles…lol
