HI, overall D is mainting her 3.3 GPA Senior year. She dipped this quarter in math to a possible D (has never had a D in all of HS). Do colleges look at each semester grade or just the final year average per course?

They see only the final transcript, not the semester grades unless you choose to send them.

They see what is on the transcript. In the community where I live, transcripts include grades by semester…especially since some courses only last for one semester.

Depends on how your school district records a transcript and it will very from high school to high school…our school records grades by trimester - so even if a class is a 3 trimester class (a full year class) the transcript will reflect 3 grades and in our case there is no “final grade”…so AP English might look like this: AP English I - A, AP English II - B+, AP English III - A- and that it there is no final Grade A-. Your school could be completely different.

Know that if there is a D on the transcript she may need to send an explanation letter - but again that varies from college to college , university to university whether they care about the D or not. If she needs to explain the D she’ll receive communication from the college - no need to be proactive.
