Senior here and failing his first class ever...

So I failed AP economics with a 57 in the first quarter. Now, in the second quarter, things are only worse. In fact, it's almost mathematically impossible for me to pass unless I got 100 on the next 7 or 8 tests. Even then I'll be lucky to barely get a 65.

Not to be negative here, but I'm just being realistic <_<. I can't pass. Literally. When my school sends the midyear reports I'm out of luck.

Now here's the thing.. I've never been a bad student. I've always been a B and A student. The only C I ever got in my life was in Honors Physics. And being an english/journalism major... that wouldn't have hurt me much.

Other than that failure, I have straight A's. In AP English, Business Law, College Algebra, Journalism, etc.

So what goes through someone's mind when they see that 57? >__>, it's so out of place. And it's not like I'm applying to community college. My application includes Northeastern, BU, Marist, Syracuse, and more.

Honestly? Am I screwed?

In all honesty, an F will probably kill your chances. I don’t know that much about those schools but an F anywhere is bad. Talk to your teacher and be proactive now. See if you can get extra credit to get your grade up. Why did you let your grade slip to a 57 in the first quarter? You should have acted earlier. Nonetheless, go to your teacher as soon as you can tomorrow, and talk to him about how you can get the grade up high. If the course is too tough for you, ask if you can switch out to another course, although that’s highly unlike. Most importantly, just do everything you can to get your grade set.

Good luck man.

Just drop the class or something.

Dropping the class is not an option at my school.

I plan on making sure I cover myself and at least go for tutoring and stay after school.

But still, there’s really no explanation. The class makes no sense to me, and the teacher isn’t any better. And I hate to say that, because I hate when kids blame their shortcomings on their teacher. But over half of the guy’s students are failing. And while that is no excuse by any means, it does say something.

Sorry to hear you are failing Economics, cobra1418.

Can you retake the tests?

I don’t know what kind of school you are going to but, the guy shouldn’t be failing “50% of his students” that just seems unrealistic.

If your teacher can’t teach - STUDY yourself. Read your economics textbook - buy a AP study guide if you don’t like your current book.

To be honest you have very little excuses here, AP economics is probably the easiest AP course… quite frankly I cannot imagine anyone who fails economics succeeding at an elite college… probably the admissions officers can’t either.

And just to add:

My grades aren’t dropping or anything. In fact, senior year so far has been my best year academically <_<. Despite it probably also being the most difficult in terms of course load. It’s just this one classs.

I don’t plan on doing anything with economics

My ACT is good, my extras are amazing in my field of intended major, as is my resume.

I just can’t imagine what goes through one’s head when they see straight 90’s and a random 55 <_<.

Brian: Yep, I’ve began to take it completely onto myself to learn Economics. And no, I can’t retake the test. And around 50% of failures for his students seems to be an accurate number.

My teacher ONLY grades on tests, too. No homeworks, no papers, etc. And the tests are pretty difficult. So 3 or 4 bad tests and there goes your quarter.

I’m, also not used to this. I’ve never had trouble in any class <_<. I’ve done fine in Latin 3, struggled through Physics but pulled out a C, my honors math classes, I’ve done good all around.

My transcript is going to look so weird now. It’s clearly out of my character based on my academic achievement and resume.

There aren’t too many high school teachers who actually understand economics well enough to teach it to someone who doesn’t get it on his/her own.

Find a tutor who knows the subject. Are you anywhere near a college? Call the econ. dept. and get a name of a graduate student, preferably one with experience tutoring.

Best of luck.

definitely buy an AP econ study guide. It will really help.
And expect that in an AP, college level course, that the huge majority of your grade is determined by just a few major exams–that’s how grades are determined in college. In college, if you screw up on just one exam, it can really wreck your grade.

You can try concurrently retaking it online and replace the grade.

I’m not sure how adcoms view retaken courses.

Is there any difference between a D and an F?

Well see where you can get accepted without sending your senior year grades. Have you’ve been admitted anywhere yet?
Yeah I know it must be horrible, well countinue to apply to those schools and if you get admitted send your semester grades after…
