Senior on the Brink of Disaster! Help!

Black/Biracial/ Male/17

So how bad is getting 1 D your senior year first semester?
I've never gotten one before and my GPA is (was :[ ) a 3.9.
The class I got it in was AP Statistics.
The courses I took this year were all APs...Literature, Gov/Econ, Envir. Science, Psych..and then band. All of the other classes I got As or Bs in. I've always taken the highest level classes possible...APs and honors in every subject ever since the ninth grade, and my grades have been for the most part very strong, mostly As and a few Bs and a C in AP Bio last year. I got a 1900 on the SAT. I applied to a lot of the UCs and some private...with my reach schools being Brown Duke, Stanford. I have a very strong extracurricular activities list...I am a musician, and I have held many leadership positions. My essays and every part of my application were strong. I know this one grade doesn't define me. What should I do? How bad will this effect me? My friend suggested I send a letter to colleges explaining my situation. In essence, I overloaded my schedule and took too many challenging classes that conflicted with my extracurricular activities. Any advice/suggestions/comments are helpful! thanks....

Schools that look at the Senior Grade reports and have not made their decision on admission can certainly take it into consideration. Personally if it had been a C it probably would have gone with little attention if the rest of your grades were what you said, but a D does look bad (IMO).

On the letter idea, it couldnt hurt, however if they did not look at that grade report or were not going to consider it, they might pay extra attention.

My advice is find out which schools take those grades seriously and notify them and for schools that you might have been accepted to I wouldnt worry too much if the rest of your grades are fine.

^dude, you’re really lame.

as to the OP, if that’s your first D and it’ll look completely out of place with the rest of your profile maybe they will consider it to be an outlier?
