Well imo, they are really just that stupid to get caught. Typically if you think things through, there is no way in heck that you would do one of the really dumb property-damaging/possible-person-breaking pranks.

Take my school this year for an example:
Well, about 15 geniuses (all guys) in my senior class decided that gluing all the school door locks shut at 1 in the morning was a good idea, also attempting to baracade the driving entrances of the school with self-made cement blocks. Except the cement didn't set as they didn't read the directions, and as it was too cold, and the prank was discovered way early in the morning. They were all easily found out and caught (video footage of group of guys entering home improvement store and buying large sacks of cement, and then also license plate of one of the cars driving students after the prank was discovered), and caused $1500 in damages. Not only that, many of the students are honors students/very book smart-5 of the guys were on the soccer team, many were on prom court etc. They were all suspended and not allowed to walk at graduation but at least they weren't expelled this time. They got 40 hours of community service and they are also all being charged with a federal felony and criminal trespassing/vandalism.
