Senior Scheduling

I have taken 3 years of high school Spanish courses-one in middle school and two in high school. In my junior year, Spanish did not fit into my schedule, so I elected to drop it rather than drop something else. However, this year my guidance counselor suggests I take Spanish in my senior schedule. I do not put much stock in his opinion.

Personally, I would rather take an additional science course (so I would take AP Chem AND AP Bio), which would be more challenging and I would likely do better grade-wise. However, I am concerned with foreign language requirements at colleges.

Would it be more beneficial to take the easy Spanish class or a challenging science course as a student interested in applying to the Ivies (specifically Columbia)

Is there any possible way that you could take both, perhaps by taking a zero hour class or dropping another class (maybe an elective)? I think that having four years of Spanish looks pretty admirable and is usually deemed a "requirement" at Ivies (although it may not be officially stated). That's not to say that you can't get in if you don't have four years of a foreign language, but still. Can you take AP Spanish Lang next year? If it's AP Spanish, I would recommend doing that. If it really is just an "easy" class, I would go with the AP sciences and then ask your counselor to jot down a little note about why you chose to drop Spanish (scheduling conflict + interest in challenging science courses).

I would be nervous about taking AP Spanish Lang. I have had a year off of Spanish, and it has always been my weakest subject.

I cannot take both, I have a packed schedule.

It would not exactly be an easy class, it would be an honors class affiliated with either Albany or Syracuse (forget which one)

Do colleges take the high school course i took in middle school into account as much?

Bump--can anyone else weigh in?
