Okay senior Skip Day for me is tomorrow and I feel like senior skip day teachers, principals and staff should excuse that. I also feel like senior skip day is and opportunity to let us get out of school for one day but thats not going to happen
I’m not clear what you are asking.
My daughter’s senior skip day was school sanctioned. Parents needed to still call off their child but it didn’t count as an absence or truancy, and senior classes weren’t conducted. If seniors did show up, they had a day long study hall.
This varies school by school. If your particular HS continues on with classes and you would be marked truant, then take that into consideration. I can’t imagine missing a day of school is going to matter a hill of beans for college acceptances unless you already have terrible attendance.
My school was exceptionally strict about attendance on “senior skip day” so what I did was just skipped school on a different day when they weren’t so strict about it. If you can get an excuse, go for it, but otherwise I’d honestly say use your absences another day.
I haven’t heard of skip day happening so early in the school year before. I always thought it was in the spring. The handbook at DD’s HS doesn’t officially enable skip day at all, but I think if you can get a parent to call in for you, it’s excused with a wink and nod - provided you didn’t already go over a certain number of absences.
We haven’t even begun to hit cold and flu season, so no student can be 100% sure at this early stage if they can “afford” the absence.
We have a promise scholarship program going, so seniors can only miss like 5-6 days of school, even with a doctor’s note. So the rules could be very different elsewhere.
I have never heard of senior skip day at the beginning of the year. Kids talk about at the end of the school year here. However it isn’t a thing here and it definitely isn’t okayed by the school. It would be an unexcused day off and you would be responsible for all missed work etc. If it gives you too many absences for any requirements that is a choice you make.
My kids had about a dozen skip days. I did not excuse them. If they wanted to skip, they took the consequences. If they didn’t go to school (at least 5 or 7 periods) they couldn’t do ECs, so my kids always went to school.
What is the big deal if you have one unexcused absence on your school record?
I do think it’s odd to have one so early in the year but I’ve never understood school’s threats of, “you will be marked unexcused.” Really? Everyone should live so dangerously life. Personally I believe everyone should have a, “Ferris Buller’s Day Off” in their life. I do find it odd in September but…maybe there’s an awesome parade in downtown Chicago to go to. I mean, be in.
Life is going to get a lot tougher than this. You’ve got this decision.
Schools won’t officially sanction a skip day because they get funds from the government for every student in school that day.
And here I naively thought it was because they were committed to students’ education.
Actually, private schools, in general, will also not sanction a skip day.
