I just got accepted into UF, honestly I never imagined getting in, so I never even considered it. Not to mention my sister is currently a Nole, and I've had my mind set on going up there with her for the past 3 years. However after friday and getting into UF I now have a lot to think about. I UNDERSTAND UF is a better school academically than FSU (which is why I'm even hesitating on my decision) what my question is, is it THAT much of a better school to risk happiness over? (even though I have no idea if i will/will not be happy at Gainesville and I'm not saying I won't be, I just know I love tallahassee). I'm also visiting Gainesville this friday, and taking a tour of the campus.

Forget about rankings! Do not look at FSU of UF from a perspective of which one is better academically. Ask yourself, which school is better for what YOU wanna study?

To me, both schools are equally prestigious in their own ways. Remember that every university is stronger in one field than the other. It would help if you could mention what you plan to major in.

Las thing, visit both campuses and examine them thoroughly. Go where you feel the most comfortable. Don’t go to FSU just because your sister goes there, go there if it feels right for you. Don’t go to UF just because gator nation people will say it’s better academically, only if it feels right for you. I cannot stress how important it is to visit colleges.

Like I said, don’t look at overall rankings. Look at what is best for you.

But my rankings are from us weekly and college board (with all due respect to the noles) but UF is in the 50s and FSU is in the 120s. To me thats a huge difference which is what’s making this so hard for me. My sister said the same thing, because she is going to be a senior next year while I’m a freshman. She said it would be nice but that not to base it solely on her presence because she’s only there for one year. I thought I was dead set on psychology but after taking government this year I’m pushing more towards being a lawyer. And for both those professions I need to go to graduate school, which is why academics are important and what school is looked at I guess from a better view point.

Your reliance on such rankings is simplistic and ill-advised. I suggest you identify the academic area(s) you are interested in - then go and visit each university and speak with the faculty in those department. See where you connect…then decide where to go.

Here is yet another FSU vs UF thread to review, where I posted a number of different ways to see academic rankings and comparison between these two universities:

Gotta say I’m in the exact same situation!
My best friend and I have been planning to go to fsu for over a year now
I used to be a die hard gator, but I thought my chances were slim and I honestly fell in love with tally but I got a big shock Friday by being accepted. I go to a small private school and I really don’t know if I’ll make it in a school as large as uf, but anyway my friend is supposed to show me around Friday as well and then Saturday I’ll revisit fsu. I just felt like even if i got into uf I would still choose fsu but now I’m very conflicted.

all i can say to guys is just visit both schools and see which one fits you best. Dont go to one school over the other because everyone else is going there. Youll make plenty of new friends at whatever school you go to. Just do whats best for you =)

The US News rankings aren’t the end-all-be-all… they are just the only poll of their kind. That said, if we’re going to talk about the rankings, FSU is 104 (not 120’s). FSU has many departments that are stronger than UF, and obviously vice versa. Visit the two campuses, know what you want to do, and then make your own independent decision on which school offers you more for your time and money. Don’t let one website’s opinion make your decision for you.

Given your options, I’m not sure you can make a wrong choice.

I have a brother who went to UF and a sister who went to FSU. I have spent a lot of time in both tallahassee and gainesville. I have also spent time on both campuses. I know for me FSU was a better fit I loved the school the city and people. Just to give you some backround info I’m an accounting major transferring from a florida CC. I did have a choice between both schools but I just decided to go where I knew I would be happier. Also if getting a job is a goal for you FSU’s career center is top 5 in the nation as far as resources.

I am freshman right now at the University of Miami with full ride. But it turns out I don’t really like it that much here. I am from Lexington, Kentucky. So when I came to South Florida everyone was very unfriendly, rich, and stuck up (being a private school and all). Since my parents moved to Florida after my graduation, I have applied to FSU for sophmore transfer because I will be instate by the time I enroll (hopefully). My parents live in Ft. Lauderdale so it was quite the drive to visit FSU. But it was well worth it. The environment is so friendly and southern. It’s a big school but feels small because the university does a GREAT job of keeping campus compact. It’s more of a college town, which is great for me. I am Biology/Pre-med and visited their biology department to talk with their advisor (call ahead to schedule an appt on the day of the tour). It really helps to call or visit them to talk about the program you are interested in.

I will tell you one thing I have learned. College is meant to be a time and place to enjoy yourself, grow, and learn. Don’t EVER pick a college based on rankings. I got into a lot of schools when I applied. Some much better in ranking than Miami, some below. Picked Miami based on best financial package, parent pressure, without visiting it, and regretting it now.

Also if someone could please chance me then that would be great! These are my stats:

ACT: 31
HS Unweighted GPA: 3.78
HS Weighted GPA: 4.64
College 1st semester GPA: 2.999 (Miami’s just a ***** by not giving me a 3.0. Also I am capable of doing much better. But I was going through some tough times so not very good.)

The application didn’t ask me anything about extracurriculars so I dunno if this even matter haha.
Extracurriculars: AP Honor Award, Men’s Club Soccer Team, Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-med Honor Society, Hands on Miami volunteer.

Beyond academics you will be hard pressed to find such a large school contain such a tight-knit community. Not only are our academics prestigious, especially our Business and Political Science fields, you will not have a better, yet inexpensive time enjoying all the city has to offer at any other school in the state.
