I just got accepted into UF, honestly I never imagined getting in, so I never even considered it. Not to mention my sister is currently a Nole, and I've had my mind set on going up there with her for the past 3 years. However after friday and getting into UF I now have a lot to think about. I UNDERSTAND UF is a better school academically than FSU (which is why I'm even hesitating on my decision) what my question is, is it THAT much of a better school to risk happiness over? (even though I have no idea if i will/will not be happy at Gainesville and I'm not saying I won't be, I just know I love tallahassee). I'm also visiting Gainesville this friday, and taking a tour of the campus.

UF is a Tier 1 school on a national level. FSU is a Tier 2 school.

If you would be unhappy at UF, I don’t think it is worth going there. But if you think you can be happy at UF, it is definitely worth it - UF has much higher national prestige than FSU.

Seriously consider UF. You will be happier in the long run based on many factors, especially the networking aspects of the “Gator Nation”. The school is huge, athletic, and commands respect in all of the Southeast.

I am considering UF now. I guess I used the whole “I don’t care if I get into UF, I’m still going to FSU” as a fall back because I never thought I’d get in. Only 6 people from my school did! I’ve never been to Gainesville and I’m going to Tally to visit my sister next weekend so she’s gonna drive me to UF and take a tour with me. I’m going to know SO many people in Tallahassee, not only did all my friends get in, but I have my sisters friends there as well. That’s comforting. I know a couple of people at UF but they’re acquaintances, hi and bye type. I’d be perfectly fine with starting a new life and meeting tons of new people, but the fact that I literally have not one good friend going, is a little intimidating.

First of all your username says a lot about you. Maybe you are scared or apprehansive but believe me you will love UF. The campus, the students, the atmosphere, the potential, the research, the resources all add up to an incredible college experience.

I keep going back to this question: If FSU, USF, UCF etc. where as good as UofF? why do they accept such a large % of students compared to U of F?

Consider yourself fortunate. Put on your orange and blue and get ready for the ride of your life.

Look at it very closely. No matter where you go, you’ll make friends, but you need a school which jibes with your attitudes. FSU and UF have completely different atmospheres, and you need to see which one best matches your personality. Obviously, the UF adcom has a good feeling that you’d do well there, but they can be wrong, so visit them both and decide. Also, remember that UF has totally different strengths from FSU. UF is much better in the biological sciences, but FSU’s got the upper hand in a lot of “human” areas, such as Religion or Criminology, so don’t discount their respective strengths when making your decision either.

Gotta say I’m in the exact same situation!
My best friend and I have been planning to go to fsu for over a year now
I used to be a die hard gator, but I thought my chances were slim and I honestly fell in love with tally but I got a big shock Friday by being accepted. I go to a small private school and I really don’t know if I’ll make it in a school as large as uf, but anyway my friend is supposed to show me around Friday as well and then Saturday I’ll revisit fsu. I just felt like even if i got into uf I would still choose fsu but now I’m very conflicted.

AndreaN fyi I my graduation class only had 18 people in it and when I went to UF I had just turned 17. Of course back then there were only 35,000 students.

When my friends asked me: how can you handle going to such a large school with so many people? My response to them was simple: you only see the people in your classes and the people that you come across between classes. You dont see all 35,000 or in your case all 50,000 at the same time.

I agree with the others. My decision would be made on what my major would be. It is pretty cut and dry.

HarrietH, let’s not post false information. FSU is a tier 1 university, as are USF and UCF.

Further, UF does not have “much higher” national prestige than FSU… people outside of the state of Florida likely couldn’t tell you one difference between the two schools, unless it’s the difference of the football score.

Matt, it all depends on how you define tiers I suppose. But most people I know go by top 100. FSU is not in the top 100, so it is tier 2.

As for national prestige, the only people who think UF and FSU are on par with each other on a national level are FSU students and alumni. And even some of those people understand the truth.

If you have ever stepped foot out of Florida then you know that people outside of this state not only know the difference between UF and FSU but they also know that the former has a much higher national prestige than the latter.

I’m between being a psychologist and a lawyer. But I’m not 150% set on that. Thank you all so much for the input. As of now, I’m more towards UF, after talking to my sister that does go to FSU and loves it (I love it too :() she’s even telling me to go to UF. But I’ll have to see if I even like the campus and town and the people. Any info on that?

They’re both good schools, UF is a little better overall. It comes down to what you want to do, really. If you want to do core sciences or engineering, UF wins no contest. If you want to major in humanities, FSU is probably the better choice. When I visited FSU ages ago, I thought it had a cool atmosphere, probably better then UF. UF is a more storied institution, so tradition is more important. UF is in better shape financially, mostly due to the endowment from alumni contributions. That could be important if you don’t think the legislature will loosen the purse strings in the next year or so.

My personal experience, compared with a few friends at FSU, is that my job search has been easier. Several of the companies I want to work for do targeted recruiting, so if you don’t go to one of the schools they look at, they won’t even consider you for entry level. For grad school, I think people from both schools are having about the same success.

To AndreaN specifically, do you know much about UF’s biomed engineering? It actually doesn’t exist yet in undergraduate. They’re planning to introduced it next year as a limited access program (even then, often people are reluctant to join brand new programs). I have no clue about the situation at FSU. Something to consider.

Anyone in this situation should just go with their gut. That’s all you have to do. Both schools are GREAT! Luckily, I never had to make this type of decision, but if I had to, I would go with my first choice college, the one that I would be happy at for the next 4-6 years of my life.

Well if you’re considering law then FSU has one of the best political science programs in the country and is also conveniently located in the capitol city so there’s plenty of opportunities. I’m in the same boat I’ve been accepted to both UF and FSU, hopefully I get into Emory so I don’t have to make the decision. You’ll have a great time at either school so pick the one that feels right to you
