I’m in a slightly different situation here. I just transferred to Northwestern University in the middle of my junior year (bad idea, I know). Anyways, I strongly dislike my current school. I figured it being a “good fit” was overrated and that I’d just ride on the brand name. The culture of the school is just too quiet for me, also there are no sports, and the weather is miserable.
I’m currently holding a 4.0 and would really like to go to Duke or Dartmouth. I’m looking for a school that studies hard and also plays hard. At NU I feel like it doesn’t offer the academics of UChicago or the social life of Michigan, and is just stuck in some strange limbo in between.
Is it worth spending the extra time and effort? Or should I just suck it up and finish undergrad as fast possible and move on with my life?
Most schools require a certain number of credit hours taken at their university to get a degree with their name on it, so I don’t really know if this is possible anymore. Also, just did a quick check, Duke and Dartmouth only accept sophomore and junior transfers, sorry. Not many schools accept seniors either.
You will probably have to stick it at NU. You’re almost done, though.
If you are unhappy at NU, consider returning to your original college/university. That may be as easy as picking up the phone.
Also it looks like you’ve been at NU for barely a month. Your discomfort there could just be a normal part of the adaptation process. Pop by the counseling center and have a chat with someone there who is familiar with the issues faced by transfer students. That person should be able to help you sort out how much is “I’m new here” and how much (if any) is “I shouldn’t be here”.
Lastly, sit down and get honest with yourself about why you applied to NU in the first place, and why you decided to transfer there once you were accepted. You had reasons for both of those decisions. If you can remember why you made those decisions, you might find ways to be happier at NU.
