Senior Year Classes

Hello! I asked another question on this forum, but I have another question. Do universities look at your senior grades (quarter, progress reports etc.) no matter when you apply early action or regular decision.

Most schools you apply to RD will request your midyear report, which is basically your grades from fall semester senior year.

For EA, it will depend on the school and when they release decisions. Most release before fall semester ends, so they won’t have your fall semester senior year grades. Some schools may request your quarter grades, but none of the school I applied EA to did. This is why it’s important to only apply EA if you do not need fall semester senior year grades to bring up your GPA.

Even if you get accepted EA or RD, the schools will still request your final transcript and may rescind admission if you do poorly. Usually this means getting D’s or F’s, but some schools have stricter policies.

@sophie9999 This always confuses me and I have heard many different things on it. Would schools like Cal Poly SLO and Purdue(for example) take you senior grades into consideration with your total GPA? Don’t you send applications before the semester grades are in? I know that they are somewhat important so colleges see you are challenging yourself and so they do not rescind your admission if you fail them, but can they really raise your GPA at say Cal Poly SLO or Purdue?

Cal Poly wouldn’t because all public schools in CA use only 10 and 11 in the GPA calculation.they may still consider the grades, however.

At Purdue, 1 semester long courses would probably be calculated in. Normally RD apps go in only a bit before 1st semester grades.

Rescinding is usually a 2nd semester grades thing, since 1st semester were probably seen during the admission process.

If you don’t pass the required CSU courses, Cal Poly will likely rescind admission.

To my understandng, Cal Poly uses the CSU GPA which only includes eligible courses for 9th-11th grade.

As for Purdue, don’t they have rolling admissions? This means they may process and release your decision before you have a chance to update them will fall grades. I’m not as familiar with Purdue though, so someone else might have a more concrete answer than I do.

I was mainly generalizing and talking about private schools in my post. If you have questions about specific schools that can’t be answered through their admissions website, it’s best to just email or call their admissions office.

@usualhopeful Would that mean UC schools not use your fall semester grades of senior year?
Thanks for the info guys!

For most applicants, the UCs do not consider fall semester grades of senior year. However, for some applicants they do send an email after you apply to request those grades or a letter of rec.

Cal Poly SLO uses 9-11th grades in their GPA calculation. All the rest of the UC’s and CSU’s use only 10-11th grades from the a-g course requirements for their GPA calculation. As stated by @sophie9999, some UC’s will send out supplementals for borderline applicants, special case/noted disability mentioned in an essay etc… Mid-year Senior grades could be requested at this time, but for most applicants Senior grades will not have an impact on your admission chances, only to maintain your provisional admission if accepted. Most privates will ask for a Mid-year transcript.
