Here is my schedule (my school works on a semester system with some yearlong alternating classes):
AP Microeconomics/AP Psychology (yearlong)
S1:
Dual Enrollment Spanish IV
Dual Enrollment Sociology
Online AP Physics 2 (using GAVS)
S2:
AP Env. Science
AP Statistics
AP English Lit
I talked to my AP Physics 1 teacher and she said that taking AP Physics 2 online is a very bad idea, and told me to take it with her during second semester. The thing is, I would have to drop AP Stat or AP Lit to make it fit in my schedule. However, I feel as if I could make a much higher grade doing AP Physics online. Also, AP Stat and AP Lit are very easy classes in my school and I could easily make a very high A. If I do drop online physics, I would take another online AP course that is easier.
Should I drop AP Stat or AP Lit to take AP Physics 2, or take it online?
@bopper I want to go into engineering or possibly pre-med. I’ve already taken all my math (up to calc bc) and I can’t take any other science with my current schedule. I’ve already taken AP chem. I do need to take English, but even if I drop AP lit I can take honors lit in place of AP environmental. The only graduation requirement I have left is lit actually, every other class is an elective.
You may want to rethink your current schedule…I would concentrate on the most important classes. For Engineering I would consider taking DE Calc 3/Multivariiable. For pre-med I would take AP Bio/DE Bio and fit in classes around that.
@bopper It is too late to make changes to anything except online physics and next semester… I mentioned I’ve taken the highest math available to me (even my community college does not have calc 2) and AP Bio would not fit. I could take AP Bio online - that is an option.
Take Physics online IF AND ONLY IF it’s not offered at your CC for Dual Enrollment.
Are you a senior or junior?
I’m afraid this schedule is a bit light for Engineering and not sure it’s optimal for premed.
Engineering expects the strongest possible schedule senior year including Physics and Math.
I understand you don’t have any more math to take, but what about Discrete Math through
the CS department, General Physics, anything related to engineering…?
I wouldn’t take Dual Enrollment Sociology at the CC because it’s a premed class that you
need to take at a 4-year college (meaning you’d likely have to take a higher-level sociology
class instead of an easy-A intro class). Cultural or Biological Anthropology, if offered, would
be good to take, as would Ethics or Philosophy (both useful for premeds).
@MYOS1634 Trust me when I say there are no classes offered at the community college. It’s extremely small (one building) and business oriented. I’ve already taken AP Calc BC and AP Physics 1, so I do have the highest possible rigor. As I mentioned, I cannot change ANYTHING about this semester, only the online class and classes for next semester.
I believe you - I know those…
Any community college a bit further away that you could get to (perhaps with evening classes if roads aren’t too dangerous or weekend classes), a 4-year college within driving distance, or an online college class from the flagahip your HS could enroll you into? For next semester.
@MYOS1634 The only sciences available at the community college are Intro to Environmental Science and Chemistry, which I already have the credit for through AP Chem. My only option is to either take AP Physics 2 online or next semester by dropping AP Literature. It is actually unusual for a junior to take Calc BC, and its very rare for anyone to take BC at all at my school. It’s a rural public school so there’s only one BC class per year, with less than 20 people. I think I have rigour covered, and I can explain this in my application if needed. The only thing I have a question about is whether to take AP Physics 2 online or drop AP Lit (However, this would be detrimental to my GPA since AP Lit is a very easy high A at my school. If i drop AP Lit, I would just take honors lit instead of AP Environmental Science).
I meant that you should take physics 2 online, sorry for the confusion.
Are there other colleges you can get to?
It’s not about rigor for holistic colleges but rather for you… You’re clearly a very competitive applicant and it’s kind of sad to complete BC as a junior -which I understand is rare at youe school and shows how good at math you are -
and then… Not be able to take any further math.
@MYOS1634 Yeah. The nearest college is 40 minutes away and it does not offer calc 3 or any other similar math this semester. I requested higher math courses to be available next semester but we will have to see if they are offered. In any case, if they are, schools won’t see my transcript updated in time to reflect that. If they do begin to offer calc 3 next semester, I will take it.
Physics is not offered at my CC for dual enrollment. Should I talk to my counselor and ask him to comment on my case in his recommendation? I don’t want whether I took physics online or next semester to be a problem when it comes to admissions. I still will be taking a “science” (AP Environmental) and a “math” (AP Stat) next semester, but purely because I have taken the tougher AP science/math courses, with the exception of AP Biology.
