Hi,
I'm in Canada and my school doesn't offer any AP or Honours courses. We have 3 levels though: Workplace, college, and university. University is the toughest and kids who plan on going to a four year university take those courses. College is more hands on, and for kids who want to go to a two year college. And workplace is for kids who want to be done with school after high school, and just get into the work force. All my courses are university level courses. I just wanted to know what you thought about it. What impression would adcoms have of me?

English
French
Law
Business
Philosophy
Human Dynamics (sociology)
Politics
World Issues

I want to be a journalist. I'm applying to Harvard, Yale, Columbia, NYU, and some Canadian universities.

no idea. isn't there a school in your area offering IB/AP? I'm in canada too and I'm doing IB, but I have to drive to a school out of my district every day to do it.. here are my courses just for comparison (I'm junior next year)

None in my area. And my high school years have been...a struggle. In grade 8, I wanted to go to an arts school. This started World War III in my house because unless you're doing something in math or science, what future could you possibly have? Anyway, long story short, we moved to a different town, knew nothing about it, too late for applications, so I ended up going to my neighbourhood school (I regret this so bad, I curse the day...). I didn't start thinking about going to the States for college until grade 10 and didn't really want to transfer then because I have a good reputation at my school. I know I'll get great recs from my teachers. I know all this sounds lame and I should have tried harder but I had no guidance, no real goals (at the time), and too much on my plate (personal stuff). I don't know. Just bad luck, I guess?

heh, tough luck.. just under a month ago i decided i wanted to go to a top uni, so now i'm going into gr 11 wih a mindset to get 100% in each course..otherwise i would just coast through school this year

i doubt H/Y are gonna be possible, but you didn't post your SAT scores or GPA (do they do them in canada? I didn't care about it before so I don't know..i do know mine would suck so im banking on a high IB Diploma mark to help me out)

My average is in the 90s. I have yet to take the SATs. I know that my target schools are reaches but it keeps me driven. My ECs are focused on my love of journalism. Editor-in-chief of school newspaper, Editor-in-chief of a newsletter for an NGO, regular contributor to a community youth newspaper, and internship at a magazine. Plus Mock Trial (lawyer), Peer Mediation (peer mediator), Street Kids International Youth Leadership Council, PR Rep for Amnesty International (President this year, maybe), participated in a month-long leadership workshop last year and might be facilitating it this year. Over 100 hours of volunteer work (AIDS campaign, art gallery, day care, tutoring, etc.). POETRY! POETRY! POETRY! (going to send in some of my best work)...hoping to start some kind of a writer's club at my school...share, critique, etc. Also, my friend and I are going to start an AIDS awareness campaign/fundraiser...it's going to be a year long thing. And that's all I can think of for now. My grades aren't that amazing...I slacked of at the beginning of high school but they're ok now but of course...lackluster. I'm hoping my essays, writing samples, recs, and ECs help? And the interview. Oh, I'm not working right now but I've had two part time jobs in the past. Party Packagers and Pizza Hut, was customer service rep and cashier at both. Trying to find more volunteer work. Preferably something to do with mental health. Got an interview at two centres but both declined because I'm under 18. It's so frustrating! Anyway, sorry about the tirade.
