Senior year grade trouble

I am currently failing calculus first marking period and will probably not recover this marking period. All my colleges are early action, but some do require midyear reports and all require final. I am wondering if there is any chance of me still getting into college with this first mp grade being the way that it is. BTW, my hardest college is UMD, and target colleges are rutgers, penn state, etc. GPA around average for all these schools except UMD, where it is lower. SAT is 1410, also around average, maybe slightly higher. going for business.

It will certainly be a negative in your application. In addition, if you end a class with a D or F it could be grounds for any acceptance being rescinded.

You need to talk to your teacher and guidance counselor. Decide if you should stay in the class and, if so, how to improve your performance. If you can get a tutor that may help. Keep in mind that calculus builds on concepts so if you are lost in the class now it may be hard to recover.

I agree with @happy1, if you fail the course, it may seem like you stopped trying senior year, even if that isn’t the case. I think your best option is to switch out into an easier course. I know that my school offers a course called Business Calculus, which is basically the easier, more slowed-down version of calculus which would show that you technically did calculus, but your grade would be a lot better.

If there isn’t a similar option at your school, then I think your best option is to switch to an easier math, even if its not calculus, like statistics.

Try talking to your teacher and see whether you can stay after school a couple days a week to recover from this or whether you can do any makeup work. If you explain your situation, I’m sure they’ll be understanding!

Good luck!
