Do first quarter grades factor into Yale's SCEA?

No, they do not.

I’ve heard mixed replies so far. Some people say that Yale sometimes asks for first quarter grades. Others say it doesn;t factor in. IM SO CONFUSED

^
They want you to send them your mid-year report when available. If their decision comes out before the mid-year report, I don’t see why it would be required. If they defer you, then you’ll have to send that mid-year report.

They can always rescind acceptance in extreme cases, so for example if you get accepted don’t fail all of your classes because they will eventually see it (but after decision for early action is released). Same applies to end of year reports

Their decision WILL come out before the mid-year report; so it does NOT factor into your chances at SCEA.
However, if you are accepted/deferred then you will need to send in Mid-year grade report. I agree with Madshock that only if you are failing all of your classes, etc, would they rescind an SCEA acceptance.

I was under the impression that colleges contact the guidance department and ask for “First quarter” grades or the equivalent at whatever high school.

that’s exactly what i heard. please if anyone knows…

ccuser18: That’s what my counselor said as well. My counselor just took the initiative and sent my first quarter grades to them before they asked; it’s not like I had anything to hide.

There are reports on CC of students doing much better than failing all their classes (ie. A’s on admission transcript going to B’s and C’s 2nd semester senior year) and getting an acceptance rescinded. All admissions offers are contingent on your continued performance at the level you showed for admission. Just want to make sure no one sees an SCEA admission as an invitation to blow off the rest of their senior year. :)

Keep your grades up! Yale sets up an admitted students website each year. I remember from my son’s year SCEA admits posting about getting a letter from admissions after their mid-year grades, which had dipped, were received. I can’t clearly recall the particulars, but it seems to me they were asked for reasons for the drop and politely told of the need to maintain their previous academic performance. It was a warning to improve. As I recall, a drop from As to Bs could trigger the letter.

Admissions definitely do get rescinded. Don’t fall prey to senioritis.

Keep in mind that you will need to use those senior grades for transferring to other colleges and/or entering in some program of interest in your specific uni.

Don’t blow senior year off…it may just be one of the most important years of your life…in terms of grades and all including.

I was not planning to slack off and fall to senioritis. It usually takes me a full quarter before i adjust to a class and find the techniques to succeed. So, my first quarter grades are usually the worst because im still searching for my “mojo.” So yea i just feel that first quarter grades would be a little misleading on my overall academic performance. Whatever though, they’re solid.

What do colleges think if there is a slight dip in first semester senior grades? I’m taking Physics C and Calculus BC this year, both of which are really difficult courses…and my grades aren’t that awesome in the classes at the moment.

I’m sort of skeptical that Yale would (attempt to) procure first quarter grades, considering the radically different systems in place at many schools. Like, I don’t think my counselor even has access to that information… I really can’t see the admissions people from Yale calling, like, however many hundreds or thousands of different high school counselors just to determine first quarter grades.

Yeah, but I’m talking about semester dips…not quarter dips.

Yale won’t have access to your Midyear Report for the SCEA deadline (unless the semesters at your HS are done early, and they see them then).

Either way, they know those classes are more difficult, and a slight dip shouldn’t be too big a deal. Unless of course it is a not-so-slight dip.

By the time I’d submitted my early app last year I think first quarter’s grades were on it already… so yes, they do matter (1st semester more than others, I think) but they’re not super super crucial. Once (if) you get in SCEA, you kind of just have to not reallyyyyyy screw up the rest of the year and you should be fine :o)

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!! class of 2014 is eager to welcome you guys :)

I’ve gotten A’s and A+'s for most of high school. These dips would be probably around the B/B+ range. I was talking about the hypothetical that I get deferred/rejected and have to apply to other schools RD.

Under special circumstances the colleges will actually contact your college counselors and ask for your 12 week grading report even though it’s not your complete first semester grades and if you have any C’s or below you’re pretty much out of their consideration. I’m pretty sure they don’t care if you have B’s as long as you bring them up by the end of the semester.
