I'm a junior and right now I'm trying to decide on a schedule for next year. I'm currently 12th in my class and have a 4.875 weighted GPA. The AP's that I've taken are:

Sophomore:
AP Human Geography

Junior:
AP English Language and Composition
AP Psychology
AP US History

Next year I'm planning on taking AP Statistics, AP Spanish IV, and then I'm unsure. I'm currently choosing between AP Music Theory and AP Government. My preference is to take AP Music Theory as it's going to be beneficial to me in the chorus classes I take (including Honors Chamber for two years in a row) as well as in playing the piano, but I'm worried that AP Gov will look better on my application. There also is the option of taking both APs next year to make the total for my senior year 4.

I guess the question is, by taking AP Spanish, AP Statistics, and AP Music Theory, am I screwing myself as far as getting into Carolina? I am very well rounded as well (captain of Mock Trial team, community service, 20 hours/week employment) and want to make sure I have the time to continue all of my activities...but at the same time I really want to go to Carolina. Thanks!

Oh something important to add: I am in-state.

Seeing your stats and that you’re in state, take whatever you want. One of my friends got in last year with only 3 APs total and they were in her senior year. You have nothing to worry about. As long as you keep your grades up, the number of APs you take next year will not matter.

With your GPA and class rank, you should be in. I would advise making sure that the APs you take are accepted by UNC and count towards your major.

You’ll have to look up your individual major to see what each requires.

I would advise anyone who is going into science at UNC to take AP Chemistry/AP Biology in high school if they can. They are worth a huge amount of credit if you get a 5 on the end exam (but still worth less credit for a 3 or higher) and will be far less painful in high school than at UNC.

By skipping a math course…you don’t automatically get kicked out of the equation. I had one friend who didn’t take math b/c well it wasn’t her preference. She got into UNC just fine. Goes to show that when you write your essays, you really need to display your schedule with your passion…rather than fill it with requirements that ppl place to make an impression.

Thanks everybody for the advice! I’ve decide to go ahead and take music theory and just not take government. I’ll have had 4 years of math and I’m planning on doing something business related as my major so I’m not worrying about a science AP.

You all really helped me make my decision, thank you!

If it helps any, know that the average admitted freshman’s GPA (for the 2010 year) was a 4.47. You’ve already far surpassed that, so I think it would be totally okay if you take the three APs (Music Theory over Government & Politics). Also: I think that as long as you keep your grades up and continue to be involved extracurricularly, you should be fine.

@ gasmasque, each year the level of competition is getting higher. I believe the cut off is somewhere near the mid 4.5-4.6 now. However, you are correct that the OP has far surpassed the mark in this feat.
