Senior year, I am considering doing an internship in my school’s city for 2 out of 7 periods of my school day (the other 5 being IB classes). I would likely do one in buisness/marketing/communications which are my potential majors for college. Will doing this instead of taking a full 7 periods of academic classes hurt my chances at competitive colleges?
Will you be graduating with a full IB diploma? Then don’t worry about this. Enjoy the internship.
Will you be graduating with less than a full IB, but your counselor will still be happy to check the box for “most rigorous” program? Then don’t worry about this. Enjoy the internship.
You will learn a lot more in a good internship than in two random academic classes. Go do your thing. Learn a lot. It will be much more useful for you in the long run than those two other classes could be.
Will you be taking a Math, Science, English?
Will you have fulfilled graduation requirements for Social Studies?
Have you gotten to the 4th level of a Foreign language?
Isn’t the IB 6 subjects - will you complete one SL this year?
Yes I will be taking all those classes and I and will not be taking a language senior year, but will have taken spanish from 6th to 11th grade (to spanish 6)
It is fine to take the internship if the following requirements are met:
-
You have taken or will take all of the required/recommended classes for each college you plan to apply to (google the common data set for each school and check section C).
-
You will meet your HS graduation requirements.
-
If you plan to apply to top tier colleges be sure your guidance counselor says that your HS schedule including the internship is sufficient to get the box on the recommendation checked saying you have taken the most rigorous course-load available at your HS.
