Senior year...ONE bad grade?

Hi, I'm a senior right now. I am applying to most of the "top" (for lack of a better word) universities -- Stanford early action, HYP, MIT, Caltech, etc. I had good (ie, A-ish range) grades in 9th-11th grades, have good grades in my senior year high school classes so far. BUT, I am also taking a college course (math) at a local community college. I find it really hard, and I have a C that is lowering as we speak. I really want to try to get it to a B, but I'm not really sure how likely that is. Will getting a C kill my chances at admission? Without that, I would say that I had a decent shot at the aforementioned schools... and would it also significantly hurt my chances even at the schools I considered my matches and safeties?

Even though I feel horrible already, please, be honest. Thanks in advance.

P.S. I am sorry if threads like this have been created in the past. The search function didn't really turn up any results that answered my question exactly.

Is there any reason you'd have to report it? If it's not transcribed onto your high school record, then it would be up to you to report it and have the transcript sent. I mean, if you didn't report it that would leave you without a math class for 12th grade, although you could pick up that last year of math in some other way -- a correspondence course or something like that if you jumped on it right away.

Otherwise I'd say it probably depends on your intended major a bit. It you plan to major in English for example and that concentration is already apparent in your transcript, subject tests, activities, etc., then it would be less petinant than if you're a math or engineering major or something like that. In other words, it's hard to say what effect it will have since it's just one tiny piece of the whole picture.

Thank you for the reply.

Yeah, I put on my application that I was taking it currently, so I assume they would want to see the grade.

That's the part the worries me. I'm interested in math/science... I'm in math club and stuff. .__. Of course, the math I do in math club is "competition" math, which is very different from college math (I am taking linear algebra), IMHO. Though I know that's not much of an excuse.

Would this also be grounds for rescinded admission (I am referring to early action)? Or is that only for more severe cases?

You need to report it because if they find out later, your admittance will be rescinded. Not sure what to tell you except to do the best you can. It depends on the CC class, but generally CC classes are considered easier than 4-year college.

CC classes are generally easier than a respectable high school too.

Study more?

CC classes should be easier than reputable HS AP and 4 year college classes; if you cannot get an A/maybe B in a class full of college rejects or high school dropouts, it won't look too bright.

Ok, so, why exactly are you taking that CC course? is it just to "help" your chance of admission or truly that you are passionate abt that subject? Colleges would easily identify this...so, take ur decision fast, and if you think there's no way you can atleast get a B in a CC course..I'd suggest you to drop it..it doesn't look good at all esp for the colleges u r applying to.

thanks for reading.
i guess there's nothing really i can do except work harder...

hmm..I'd say you gotta work harder AFTER thinking through stuffs and deciding whether it's the right thing you are doing...remember..do what you like to do..not necessarily what you think will represent you in a better way to colleges.....which is not necessarily true most of the times. Enjoy your High School life!!!!

When will your next grades come out? If it's not on your current transcript, you won't have to report it unless they specifically ask for it. They will ask for a mid-year transcript though, so if you get your grades back up by then you should be fine.

I agree it is unfortunate that the OP is getting a C currently. I would bet that linear algebra at the schools he's mentioned he's applying to would be quite a bit tougher than his current class. However, I don't think we should just assume that the CC class is especially easy. It could easily be harder than any high school math class he has taken. It is probably too late for him to drop the class, but if the OP could raise his grade to a B, it should not hurt him, as it is a course most high school students don't take.

Sorry to revive this thread, but I didn't want to create another. I wish I could edit the first post?!

So now my grade is a borderline A/B (perhaps closer to the B). Gosh, I've never been much of a borderline grade person; now I know how those people feel :X

SO basically I'm asking, would a B look horrible?

No, 10 char

just be all like oops, I forgot to send in the community college report if they specifically ask for it. otherwise...forget about it.

Don't do what sheed just said. A B is fine. Great job pulling your grade up!
