Senior Year: SAT, ACT, and grades.

Since it's summer (college counselor is probably off herding yaks somewhere), I was wondering, specifically for the UCs, how many opportunities you have to take the SAT and ACT during your senior year.

My second question is a followup on an older post. Do the UC admissions officers use your first semester senior grades to determine your admission, or do they already decide whether you get in or not, and then use the grades to check if you're still being consistent?

For admissions purposes, I think they only look at your grades senior year if you are selected for augmented review. Students selected for augmented review are those the university does not admit outright on the first reading, but does select for a closer look, hence they consider the first semester senior grades and a recommendation letter, and (not sure about this) other supplementary materials.

I believe you can take your sat, etc through October and maybe even December senior year.

All information on your application regarding test scores, gpa, etc must be confirmed later with your transcript and from college board, but they do not require the transcript at the time of application as far as I know.

October is your only guaranteed chance. December might be a possibility.

Good point (to first reply). Anyone else have an idea? I dumbly chose to do 4 honors, 2 ap courses for senior year, and would like to change out of at least some of those classes depending on how a college looks at my progress in them. Um..My main question is still whether or not the UCs use senior grades to determine your elegiblility...so i guess there was no reason for me to post this, but keep answering, I appreciate it!

All UCs take SAT or ACT tests through the December test dates. Though the application deadline is Nov 30, that is not the date by which test scores must be in. Generally, except for possible exception noted above, UCs use grades only through junior year to make admissions decisions. You do not submit transcript at time of app and you self report grades on app; transcript is not due until after you complete senior year or you receive a request for it earlier -- they reserve the right to withdraw your acceptance if your grades reported on app were incorrect or you do poorly in senior year.

To clarify: most uc students will be admitted on their sophomore and junior grades, with the strength of their senior schedule being part of the equation. so if you got good enough grades soph and junior year and now want to take a break, that will not work as they will expect you to keep up the rigor throughout senior year. And it doesn't end there, if you drop any classes at semester during senior year, they can rescind your admission. The amount of rigor you need varies from UC to UC. Obviously, Cal and UCLA will have a different set of standards than UCR or UCM. The middle tier UC's are getting very competitive as well. Hope that answers your question.
