Hey everybody,
I've basically constructed my senior year schedule and it looks something like this:
-AP Bio
-AP Comp. Government
-Honors Journalism
-College Level Sociology
-Statistics
-Interning for a teacher during one period of the day
-Elective (Mandatory)
-Homeroom
This is a 0-9 period schedule. It's basically full and I have no room for other classes.

Senior Extracurriculars:
-President/Founder of Weekly JSA Debate Club
-Model U.N.
-Varsity Basketball
-Senior Yearbook
-Senior Council (Planning senior activities)
-Editor in Chief at School's Newspaper
-Weekend Job at Staples

Is this a bad schedule for IVY Leagues? Should I have taken more APs? Please comment on the schedule.

I would put in an AP for Honors Journalism or statistics.
Try AP statistics and AP English comp

Interning for a teacher? good if you actually want to be a teacher.
Your schedule seems good, I would put in more AP’s personally. It might seem like a case of senioritis to ivy league.

I can’t really add anything any more. If i could, I would get rid of stats and add an AP Calculus class, but I can’t. And interning for a subject I like. It’s not really interning, it’s like helping the teacher teach the material. I get a grade for it + internship hours. Also, I don’t think senioritis would be the case with me. That term usually applies to those who have the urge to leave early. I pack a full a schedule, in that I am coming in to school before school hours and I’m leaving after school hours. Plus I have a long list of ECs, so based on that, please share your thoughts.

the length of the list doesnt matter especially since in this case they’re all generic, cookie-cutter ecs. and yeah that schedule does look easy

I’m not saying to add things, just take away the unnecessary. Why not AP English or Dual enrollment for honors journalism?
Interning hours are good, but the help the teacher thing is considered a slacker class at my school (thats just my school though)
And senioritis is not just for people leaving early. I think it applies to people who don’t take advantage of harder classes when they are available senior year. If that is the absolute hardest schedule you can have. Then you are fine. But I would put in more AP’s for those classes like statistics (maybe even honors discrete or something) and an AP english class.
Please don’t take this offensively, but your EC’s don’t seem like a “long list”

a weekend job, 4 clubs and a sport doesn’t seem like a lot to me. And its not about the breadth its about depth, which you don’t seem to have either

@MichaelGScarn - I respect the harsh criticism. I know taking more AP Classes would’ve been better. And by generic, cookie cutters ECs, please specify. Just putting it out there, my school was built two years ago and all of the ECs listed above are basically the only ones present in my school. I also hold leadership positions in all of them (i left out a few ECs above).

@AlexHarper - I got your points. Taking AP English is definitely floating around my head now. I’ll call to see if I can get it added. And read the response to MichaelGScarn. What is “breadth and depth” to you?

@Alex: I just wanna point out that OP is Editor in Chief of the school newspaper, so dropping Journalism for AP English probably isn’t an option, haha.

@OP, I know that you already stated that you can’t change out Statistics for AP Calc, but is it possible for you to switch that out for AP Stat instead?

@benfster - LOL what does OP mean? Original poster? And I could try to drop Stat for AP English. I don’t plan on dropping Journalism for the EIC reason (3 years and running). And our school had a list of 5 APs offered to seniors: AP Bio, Comp Gov., Calc, Studio Art and English Lit. It sucks that I go to a small school otherwise I would’ve taken more AP courses that actually interest me.

So you can’t take calc for stats?
And don’t drop stat for AP lit, You need a math all four years.
What elective are you taking?

@AlexHarper - I might be able to, but the teacher is horrible. So taking it would look like the easiest AP on paper, but would be the hardest class in reality. Believe me when I say this, the teacher is BAD. I basically had to teach myself Precalc out of the book and I don’t know how, but I got an A in that class all year. And I plan on taking math all four years, but this is where I’m stuck, I don’t know if i should take AP Calc b/c of the teacher. And the elective is going to be Art in the Fall Semester and Gym in the spring semester. BTW, electives are assigned by the school (for credit purposes)…I know, I know, it sucks.

Oh okay I see.
Let me edit a little:
I think your schedule is good under your circumstances. You’ve done a good job. It depends on how you are. Some people will take an AP even if the teacher sucks, but I don’t know if that would be too risky seeing as you taught yourself pre cal and everything.
Your school’s rules for electives are awful! Gym as a senior? And you can always self study an AP if you have time. Like Environmental or Psych

@AlexHarper - I’m an excellent student, salutatorian at the moment at my school. But, I think it would be extremely risky myself, considering the fact this is an AP class and that was just an honors course.
And tell me about it dude! We have no flexibility for our electives. And by self study you mean, take the AP exam, but no course? That’s sounds good, but colleges like to see a fall semester course load, and the AP exams are in June. I don’t see how that would work out.

Can you switch Sociology for AP English? Maybe it’s different at your school, but sociology is one of those blow-off, easy classes here xD

Nah, I can’t. It’s A College Now course (SOC 100). It’s gonna be last period (3:00) to 5:30 pm.

Switch the ‘interning’ for ap lit.

You offer an extremely great suggestion. I’ll ask if this can be done, but how hard is AP Literature and Composition? Also, with the addition of this AP course, is my schedule going to look “tougher?”

I just hope they offer AP English Lit when I’m interning.

Definitely! AP courses are a great way to show colleges that you are worthy of their acceptance. Honestly, I think the ‘interning’ is just a way to give lazy teachers a break.
