First off, i come from a very limited, rural school. We only have 4 APs and the only other "difficult" classes are ones that are taken for community college credit. My guidance counselor pushes everyone to the local community college, state school, or even worse, GED. Needless to say, I have higher aspirations but the GC is not helpful.
Here is my planned schedule:
College Calculus (1 period)
College biology (1 period lecture, 1 period lab)
AP chemistry (1 period lecture, 1 period lab)
Jazz Band (1 period)
Wind ensamble (1 period)
AP Government and Polics (1 period)
College english/composition (1 period)
College Spanish V (1 period)
Gym (1 period opposite labs)
Basically, my schedule is full. But some of the colleges i want to apply to (ie Stanford) suggest biology, chemistry, and physics. :/
I'm in a Catch 22. I want to fulfill their suggestions but they also want the most challenging classes. So I can't drop my sciences because they are the hardest my school offers and they are my planned major for college.
So what I want to know is how important is taking physics? I don't want it to doom my chances at selective universities. I really don't know what to do :(

Bump?
10char

Bio, chem, and physics all are suggested at my school too. I took honors my first three years and most people will take AP/college level their senior year. I would say it depends on your major. What do you want to go into? If you are doing medicine don’t waste your time in physics, if you want something like engineering you probs wanna take physics depending on the type of engineering. I took some of the similar classes my senior year(last year) and they arent too bad. May I also ask where you are from?

I’m in a similar situation (though my highest aspiration is USC, and I probably can’t even manage that). My rural little school only has 5 APs (6 now, they just added AP bio for next year, but I already took bio my sophomore year and I’m almost a senior haha).

Anyway, I would do either chem or physics if you can’t fit in both. I’m just going to do chemistry next year. It depends what you want to go into, or which you find more appealing I suppose. I don’t think colleges rate one higher than the other.

May I ask what your UW GPA and ECs are?

I’m planning on majoring in biochemistry with a minor in mathematics. I also plan to go to med school after undergrad. My unweighted gpa is about a 98.5-99.0 on a 100 point scale. SAT is 1410 (640 writing ) and I plan to retake in October.
ECs:
Model UN: 3 years, Various awards such as honorable mention, best resolution (2 years in a row at same conference) I also applied to/and was accepted to a delegation that went to THIMUN 2011. Also my delegation has came in 9th place ( all rookie first years) and 3rd twice ( Veterans)
I have volunteered for 4 years at a not-so-nearby cancer hospital over the summer.
I’m a selected member of the Principal’s student advisory board and the first District Leadership Team in my district.
I was chosen to be an interviewer in a student stakeholder group that interviewed potential superintendents.
Varsity golf and swimming (3 years)
Varsity Tennis (2 years)
Made all county band twice
Peer Leadership 9th and 10th grade but it was cut for 11th grade
Link Leader at freshmen orientation

I think I’m forgetting some things but i’ll add them if I remember

Also I’m from Western New York. As far from the City as possible :P

Oh ok, did you take physics at all during high school? I know colleges usually want just a general one taken. But because of what you want to do I really don’t think you need AP Physics. And that is a really odd way of doing GPA…lol

I haven’t because my school doesn’t really let anyone take general physics until 12th grade :(. And yeah, I hate having gpa out of 100

Oh ok, I would just check with the schools and if it really is that big of a deal with your major. Physics is not used at all in medicine. I took it my junior year and I hated it lol.

Thank you all!!! I decided just to go with AP Chem and College Bio!
