Senior Year Schedule

Hey guys! It’s scary how high school has passed by so quickly (yet also so slowly), and that I’ll be a senior soon. With that being said, I need some advice on my senior schedule, please! My school requires every senior to take minimum 5 classes, with English and Gov/Econ being the required general ed.

My current junior schedule:
AP Lang
Honors Integrated Math
AP Bio
APUSH
Chamber Orchestra
German III

Senior schedule:
AP Literature
(AP?) Gov/Econ*
Chamber Orchestra
AP Art History
APES and/or Calc AB**

  • So this class at my school is infamous for all the suffering it brings the seniors. The AP teacher noodles around in class, and doesn't teach well. Is AP Gov and Econ an easy, read-the-textbook type of class? If I can survive the class/exam through self-dependence, I'm willing to take it. Otherwise, I don't want to risk my GPA! Or my sanity.

** I’ve completed my requirements for math, but everyone says 4 years of math is best. Thing is, I’m not a fan of math, and I’d only be taking Honors Calc AB. So, no AP credits/significant transcript booster. Could potentially bring down my GPA too. :frowning: Thoughts? I’ll still take it if it makes a difference, but I’d rather take APES.

The reason I’m trying to cut down on classes is because I plan on taking classes at my local community college.
German 3/4 for sure, so that I can take the AP and SAT German exam.
Possibly also Psych 101 or something along those lines
Thoughts on this would be great as well.

Sorry for the long post. Any advice or insight is appreciated!
I also don’t have a specific idea of what to major in (is that bad? @-) ) but possibly something in the field of social sciences, politics, or business. Idk fam. Help me out!

I’m a high school student too so I’m not an expert on what colleges want, but from a philosophical-life perspective I think you should take APES if that’s what would make you happy (just be sure to clarify if asked that you wanted to take APES because you are interested in it, not because you hate math). APES could potentially be beneficial for a major in social sciences because you would be studying the environment and perhaps health policies depending on how strictly your teacher abides by the AP curriculum. I would just double check and ask yourself how sure you are that social sciences or politics or business is the route you want to pursue, because math would highly assist you in a major related to engineering or physics.

@Dcello11 Thank you for your insight! I just found out today that I will be able to take regular or AP Statistics instead of calc, so I might take math as well as APES after all. Cheers!

So my next question is whether I should take AP or CP stats. Lots of people say it’s an easy class either way, and some take AP Stats along with calc. Would love to hear from current stats students!

Taking calculus AB IS a big point for rigor, but if you’ll be at the community college for German 201-202 (=college Level 3+4) why not take calculus 1 spring senior year (when try grade won’t matter as long as you pass - what matters is to list or on your schedule)?
If you prefer, you could absolutely take statistics instead - either AP stats or cc stats. However it’s better to take the college version than the high school version, especially if you plan on being a social science major.

@MYOS1634 Good points. I think I’ll go with AP Stats for now, and talk with my teacher or counselor about Calc in spring. Thank you!
