Senior Year Schedule

Ok need some advice - my son is 3rd in his class at the moment. Junior year (take 4 courses a semester) - he took AP Chem (year long), AP Calc (AB and BC year long)), Honors Eng 3, French 3, AP Eng Lang Comp, AP Earth/Envir - got all A's except B in AP Eng first semester.

Now it is time to do his schedule for next year - Senior Year - this is what he wants to take - AP Physics (year long), AP Stats, Honors US HIstory, APUSH, Honors Eng 4, and Advanced Chorus Full year (his passion is music but doesnt want to major in it)

Will colleges look at it as a "lite year". He cant take any additional courses in Math that is the highest he can go to is AP Stats (will not have transportation to take an upper level math at a college). He doesnt want to take French 4 because he does not like the new French teacher.

no, i dont think so. why is he taking Honors and AP US History though. And just because he got a B in AP English Lang first semester should not preclude him from taking AP English Lit if his school offers it-your son should learn to get over the fear of a B. What physics (B or C) is he planning to take?

Why take two US History classes? Isn't that a bit repetitive?

^^^^^^I agree. 2 US History classes make no sense.

Some schools require you to enroll in an honors course that goes hand in hand with an AP. Not how my school works so I don't really understand how it works or the reasons behind it, but the OP's son could go to that type of school.

My son has to take the honors US then the AP - thats how his school works.

My son is ok with the B in AP Eng. He had a tough teacher as well as taking Honors Eng at the same time. Many sleepless nights. He does not want to take AP Lit - he hates English.

Im really not sure of what the Physics the offer in his school - but i am thinking C.

I think the schedule is fine, by the way.

It's good that he's taking advanced chorus- even if he doesn't want to major in music, it's still nice to take a class that you really really enjoy senior year. I love all my core subjects but the extra art class tacked on has made the day a lot more fun/relaxing.

It's sad about the French teacher, but he has the admissions requirements so far, I guess. Just remember that some colleges have language requirements that he might not be able to completely test out of because of lacking that last year- especially because his placement tests are a year away, and he'll have forgotten a lot of material.

Update on my son:

He told me yesterday that he is thinking of taking a course at a college for Math in his senior year. He said he was going to drop AP Stats and take the next level math at college. He plans on majoring in Chem Eng undergrad and then go into Nuclear for Grad. After he finishes AP Calc AB and BC - what is the next level math that he should take.

So this would be his schedule for Senior year -

First semester - AP Physics, H Eng 4, H US, Advanced CHorus
Second Semester - AP Physics, Advanced Chorus, then Math at the college

Does this sound like an ok schedule - do u think he can fit in another college course, he wsa thinking of fitting in APUSH if he would be able to fit it in, but he really wants to take a math course instead.

Of course this does depend on the fact that he gets his license - i told him he has to drive and practice before he can go get his license lol

That is lite. It should have 5 solid subjects.

^^Agree with Columbia. What happened to APUSH?

He would rather take the next level math then APUSH - he really does not care for social - he is a math/science guy. He can only take 4 courses a semester. Since he would take a course at the college - they allow one period for drive time since it takes approx - 20 - 25 minutes to get to the college

My daughter does not care for Math either. But it was on her senior year schedule. She has 5 APs and one art class, kept telling me all her friends have an easier senior year. So far she has better admission results then her friends.

Your son should really take English. Colleges will wonder why he didn't.

Classic,

He is taking English - he would take Honors Eng 4, H US History, Advanced Chorus and Physics first semester.

Second semester he would take = Physics (year long course), Advanced Chorus (he is also the piano accompaniest = he plays half the songs and sings have the songs per request of the teacher), plus the next level math course at the college - not sur eif he would be able to take two college courses his second semester.

He didnt take Chorus at all his Junior year because his schedule would not allow it.

Let me stress something that my son takes the courses he took because he wanted to take them. He is not a child that competes with the others. I let my son and his counselor work out his schedule together. He does not care what rank he is. He loves school and goes with the flow. When report cards come in, he doesnt even check or ask what rank he is at the end of the year. He knows he is up there high in the standings, but to him he is there to learn and let the pieces of the puzzle fall where they may. I am the one that thinks it may be a lite schedule compared to his other years.

Linear Algebra at the college, would be a good choice.

And AP lit instead of Honors English.

Sheed,

He has no choice but to take H Eng - that is a reguirement for graduation at his school.

Thanks for the input in regards to the math class.
