Senior year scheduling conflict.

Okay, so I'm not planning on slacking off senior year, and I plan on increasing my AP course load. We are currently in the process of scheduling for next year and I noticed a problem. We are required to take a semester long PIG (Participation in Government) Class, a semester long economics course, and a semester long speech course in our senior year. Additionally, we are required to take a semester long health course sometime during our high school career which I haven't taken yet. However, I want to take the full year AP US Government course for my PIG requirement, and a full year AP Macro/Micro course for my economics requirement. So, with 8 periods in a day:

AP US Government
AP Macro(Sem1)/AP Micro(Sem2)
AP Calc BC (not required, but I plan on a science/math career)
Gym/Calc Lab(required for AP Calc AB or BC)
Health(Sem1)/Speech(Sem2)
AP Physics Period 1
AP Physics Period 2 (Not required, but yeah...science career)
AP English Literature (English course required)

Okay, 8 periods right? But, I am currently in AP Spanish Language which is a two year "binding" course and I must continue to take the class next year culminating in the AP exam. That goes above 8 periods!! What do I do?

What are the advantages of taking two periods of AP Physics? Do you get more college credit? Is one period Physics B and one Physics C?

Either way, I think that, given the fact that you must take AP Spanish, you should drop one of the physics periods. It seems to be your only option. The only other thing that is possible to drop is gym but that would only free up one semester (it is my understanding that gym is one semester and the calc lab makes up the other semester- correct me if I’m wrong).

^ I think he means that Physics with a lab (thus 2 periods). I think you should defintely try to take one of these courses online. While you’re taking all of the other courses, sign up for online AP Lit, that fills the requirement and your personal schedule is satisfied. However, if this does not work out, I would consider dropping AP Physics and taking another science that does not include a lab course.

Sorry, I should clarify: AP Physics is a two period class. I meant that both periods of Physics is not required as 3 years of science is enough in NYS, but that I am pursuing a science career, but to take the class, one must take both periods.

Also, gym is required, and its an A Day/B Day thing for Gym/Calc Lab
Quite a predicament right? haha, do you have any other ideas?

Thispakistinigir, I’m not sure if I’m an online guy but it’s a good suggestion. Also, I have exhausted all science options at my school with the exception of Physics. So that is also ruled out.

sd6–I sympathize with you. My D has her scheduling meeting tomorrow, and is facing similar challenges–plus, her Christian school requires Bible as one of her 8 classes, and four of the AP courses are double blocked.

Here are some ideas to consider. Health is offered online; one of my daughter’s friends found it very doable. Perhaps you could choose to take either Macro or Microeconomics, but not both, since apparently only one semester of economics is required. (If you don’t plan to major in economics, I would recommend Macro as being more relevant to your life; I’m a former economics teacher.) And, at my D’s school, students can be exempt from gym if they participate in enough outside athletic activities, such as a varsity sport or a nonschool sport; maybe that would be a possibility.

I hope this is helpful to you.

Calc LAB???

AP US Gov, AP Lit, and the AP Econ classes are all very doable via an online school. Take one of them online. Because you have a variety of scheduling possibilities (due to order of classes, teachers, etc.), this gives you a bit of flexibility with your schedule.

A very appealing option (to me at least) that hasn’t yet been mentioned is: can you take English 1101 at a local community college over the summer?

That’s what many of the incoming seniors do at my high school. The summer class fulfills your English requirement (for both high school and college). There are only 14 class periods to attend, only twice or three times per week. It is said to be much easier than AP English Lit, and accredidation in the course doesn’t depend on an AP exam.

That’s something you should consider and pursue with your guidance couselor.

Schokolade, that’s pretty tough!! FOUR double-blocked periods? Wow. I appreciate the general consensus on an online course in one of the conflicting classes, but I’m afraid my school isn’t too flexible on that. I will speak to my counselor about that. Also, taking out just one semester of economics won’t help too much as I have to free up one whole period for the whole year for Spanish. I can’t take out both because one semester is required. Also, my school doesn’t offer physical education exemption for athletes.

bobtheboy, it’s not really “lab” but the AP Calc kids are required to take a second period of Calc every other day (the second being designated “lab”).

Keasbey Nights, that’s a good idea. I just hope my school accepts this as a fulfillment of the requirements.

SeekingUni, that is also a very interesting suggestion, and I will add it to my list of things to bring to my counselor’s attention. :)

Have you taken AP biology or AP chemistry yet?
If not, and they are one period at your school, take one of those as your science in lieu of physics. It may not be the most desirable option, but if you prefer not to take online classes, it could be a decent last resort.

jfh034, yes, I took AP Biology last year and I am currently in AP Chemistry. (Both are double period anyway…). The only other option is AP Environmental Science, which will be offered at my school for the first time, but I have already self-studied for the exam and received a 5 last year.

I am now considering appealing to my school officials to free me from my AP Spanish binding, which will most likely work considering my circumstances, but I was hoping I would not have to resort to this.
