I do think they get to factor in 1st semester grades into their decision. They will certainly have them before decisions come out. I wouldn’t want to end on a bad note. A huge drop in GPA 2nd semester might create questions, but for the most part, you can relax.

Different colleges have different criteria for rescinding admission, so I can’t tell you what UPenn’s is. I would play it safe though. A couple B’s or (not and) maybe one C probably won’t be much of a problem, but don’t relax too much. You’ve worked hard for three and a half years for this, so don’t let it slip away in one semester.

They DO look at your seventh semester (or first semester senior year) grades for RD admissions. It’s the second semester senior year (or last semester/eight semester) grades that may go under the radar. I say may, because if you do get in and matriculate at Penn, they will ask for a final grade report.

I wouldn’t say it won’t “make you get in”; however, I’d say it doesn’t help your chances of admission. Esp. if you’ve been a straight A or nearly straight A student from freshman to junior year.

For all of your RD schools, you are required to send the “Mid-Year Report” which basically is your high school sending in your 7th semester grades (the colleges you applied to should have the first 6 semesters, already). You may be thinking, “What if I just don’t send them in?” and the answer is, “Admissions can and will directly contact your counselor/registrar at your high school for them, so don’t think you can get around this”.

Don’t they factor in first semester grades for your overall GPA? So if you’re a straight-A student up until now and receive a 3.5, you’re looking at a pretty big GPA drop, which will render your application less competitive.

Just do your best and you will be fine (even if you start to unconsciously slack). I know someone who got into top 20 schools including Penn after getting a sub-B grade on his midterm.

uhh im kinda in this category too. Except I’m not purposely slacking. I’m currently rank 1 and had only one B last year -in Physics C. I have a 3.96 UW, 5.125 W(hon. is 5.0, AP is 6.0)

This year… I have A’s in everything(taking 6 APs total with 1 student assistant) but AP Bio(kill me now I have a 79.8 this nine weeks but a low b for the semester… AND we have midterms in 2 weeks -___-") and AP Calc BC( ugh i had like straight 100’s in first nine weeks, but this nine weeks we are learning about sequences and series and taylor polynomials and I have a C wah! but my semester grade is an average b)

I’m applying to CAS RD for UPenn. I’m deathly scared about my mid-term report but I think my supplemental essays were killer good for upenn. It was the supplie essay that i worked the hardest on for any of the OOS college I applied to… making sure I addressed every darn thing in the prompt and kept the quirkiness of my personality.

loldaniellol and hardworking21: our school uses final grades in cumulative GPA unless its a half a semester course…

And the thing is, in AP classes sometimes I do get a B’s in one of the semesters but overall its an A. So i know I can pull my grades up.

Only exception was AP physics C: mech &em. that’s one class but teacher taught mech first(which i got an A in the semester), then e&m(which I got a b) but since its one class, I was screwed as the B brought down my low A with it. -___-"

I think the advice is to kill your 1st semester senior year (which shouldn’t be that hard, since you are so driven and focused), and coast during second semester senior year. As long as you don’t fail out… and maybe even if you do ;-), you should have your decision in the bag one way or the other
