So I've been taking band for the 1st 3 years of high school, and I went to sign up for it for my senior year, but due to my other classes (5 AP's), the slots that I have available in my schedule would only allow me to take a study hall or some non-honors classes, which I don't want to do.

Do you think a college would look poorly upon my application if I were to take a study hall, or would it be O.K? (I'm looking to get into top colleges)

Turn the study hall from a negative into a positive by using that time to accomplish something you would not otherwise have time to do or to demonstrate your commitment to something that you care deeply about. For example, perhaps the band teacher could use some assistance during that period. Or you can do an independent research project on something related to a particular interest of yours, if you can find a teacher to sponsor you. Or perhaps you can leave early if it’s at the end of the day to do an internship somewhere.

There is nothing inherently wrong with a study period, by the way, if you’ve had an otherwise rigorous academic schedule. I’m just suggesting some ways to get creative if you want to demonstrate some ‘above and beyond’ initiative and self-motivation.

Sheriff, M’s Mom is right on. Do something positive with that time such as community service work, tutor other students, etc. You can also add that to your resume.

one study hall isn’t going to kill your chances. if you’re taking 5 AP’s I have a feeling that the colleges will probably realize that you’re challenging yourself
