Does senior year have an impact on the cummulative GPA that you send to UC Berkeley? Since you only complete one semester before you turn in your app, does senior year not count as a full year?

Senior year does not count at all in the GPA that is calculated by the UC application system. You submit your application in November before any grades are available. On rare exceptions, the admissions group might request supplemental information from you which would include first semester senior year grades, but in most cases it is not a factor.

The grades you earn in senior year only matter because your admission offer to Berkeley would include conditions - generally that you maintain at least a 3.0 unweighted semester GPA for both senior year semesters and that you don’t receive any D or F in a senior year course.

In another way, senior year classes matter because you will be listing the courses you are and plan to take for all of senior year. They are assessed as part of the admissions process.

Oh okay. I see that you said it doesn’t count in the UC application system, does that mean some other systems do in fact count the first semester of senior year when calculating GPA? And also, do all schools require that i submit my application in November? I know this sounds terribly ignorant, but I’m still a junior, and I’m not sure about a lot of these dates and systems.

each school describes its process and deadlines. Quite a few schools ask for a midyear update form to be sent in, which gives them your first half senior year grades. Most require the transcript from your school and work from the GPA listed by your high school, unlike the UC system which calculates its own.

Just go to the web site for each college where you might apply, look for the admissions information for prospective students/applicants, and dig around. You will have a list of what forms, transcripts, recommendation letters etc must be mailed and by what deadline, and so forth.

Okay, thanks a bunch rider730! (:

From what I know, Berkeley only looks at your senior year grades if you’re a borderline applicant, and they send you a supplement asking for essays and your 1st semester senior year grades. They then make a decision to reject or admit the student after looking at the student’s supplement in addition to their application. I remember in my high school 4 kids got the supplement and all of them got in after that. Only a small percentage of students get the supplement though.

From what I see it’d be good to try to get a great GPA for your 1st semester during senior year, just in case that happens to you. It could be what gets you in, especially if Berkeley is a reach for you.

well, at least three kinds of supplements, only one of which is clearly for borderline (really means they are undecided, but you might be in, they need to see more to make the call). As others have said, the odds are pretty good if you get this, but not a certain admit. The other two are for special talent and for disability. Many who mention a disability will receive a supplemental request, but it tends to focus on what accommodations you need and how you are affected. No idea what the admit rate is for those sent the disability version. Those with some special national level or other talent or achievement get the third kind and if the achievement/talent is supported by the additional information, have an excellent shot at admission.
