So college apps are done (or are very soon to being done), and we're entering those four months before the magical admissions decisions come out. What's the best way y'all have of deflecting that question about "where you are going next year." I seem to get it from everybody: old teachers, family relatives, random family friends-- basically, anybody who I meet and tell I am a senior seems to think I should know already, and I have no clue, of course. Any suggestions?

“I applied to _______, we’ll see.”

I don’t know why people like to hide the schools they applied to. It’s like you’re too suspicious or sensitive or something.

Mostly because the schools I want to go to have such a high selectivity rate that nobody knows anything about chances, so I typically do a hand-wringing song and dance instead.

I didn’t tell anyone about my reach school. (With the exception of CC) I just told people where I applied without that one included. Now I just tell people where I’ve gotten in and that I’m leaning towards Pace.

I tell everyone that my dream school is Rice. Unless those people are good friends of my dad’s, then I say my dream schools are Rice and Stanford (because my dad went to Stanford and I live in Silicon Valley).

I don’t really like to talk about college to people where I live because the typical response to anything out-of-state is, “Where the hell is that?”

I always say “I really want to go to Washington University, but I probably won’t get in so I’ll probably end up at University of Oklahoma.”

I say that my top choice is Wooster, but that it will come down to the money. I don’t mind talking about it; I think the whole college admissions process is rather fascinating.

Yeah, I hate that as well. I just say that i’m going to apply to a bunch of places, and that I don’t know for sure yet. I’m a junior, though. If they ask me where I’m applying I just mention an instate state uni, an instate LAC, and Purdue because I don’t want to seem arrogant.

…College admissions is like all year… So yea I’m going to Purdue. I said it before applying and I’ll say it for the rest of the year.

Also to answer your question just say they have release their admissions yet. I doubt 3/4 of the seniors at my school know where they going.

I hate that; people act like you pick where to go and forget you actually have to apply. Before I got accepted I just said I was applying to schools in Boston, but now I can say I got in. And then shove my younger sister at them who’s just about at the age where she’ll start getting all these questions.

^That must be pretty cool to tell all your family that you’re going to Harvard, lol. Bet they were pretty damn impressed!

i just told people i want to go to a bunch of my safety schools. don’t want to talk about something and have high expectations before anything actually happens. i hate that question though.

When it comes to my friends and family, Im pretty open with the colleges I am applying to and just tell them point-blank.
But if my teachers or anyone else asks, I only mention my safety/target schools since I know that they would be skeptical if I mention my reach schools.

Hahaha I thought I was the only one. My parents thought it was weird that I didn’t want everyone to know which reach schools I was applying to. When people I ask I usually only tell them the few safety schools that I’ve already been accepted to and then say I don’t know where I’m going yet.

Hate this question. I usually say I’m applying to a wide range of schools and don’t have a top choice. I just really don’t choose to share because everyone always has some sort of judgement on schools. And I get some people don’t see what the big deal is but for me it is because I don’t wanna compare or have other people compared against me.

I just tell them where I’ve gotten accepted and say if FA comes through I’ll be there.

I try to be straightforward on somewhat touchy topics like college admissions.

Considering I don’t expect to actually get into my top choice, I really don’t know what my secondary choice is. So I’m not sure how to answer this myself.
Especially since no one in my family has any clue about how selective college admissions are.

I usually say I’m still applying and don’t know. But they always ask where I’m applying and what my top choice is, so I just say my top choice is Georgetown but I probably won’t get in, and name a few other schools.

I stopped talking about college so much after a girl asked if I had gotten any scholarships yet, and I said I got about a 20k scholarship from SMU. I said I was hoping for more because that left a large chunck of tuition left to pay, and she said “What?? That only leaves like 30k a year. You can’t pay that much??”

There are some rich people at my school, they don’t really understand having to pick a school because of financial issues xD.
