Sense of Community?

So I've done a lot of thinking and I'm pretty sure I'll be at NYU next year!
But I haven't turned in my statement of intent so before I set things in stone, I want to know the sense of community at NYU.
The other school I'm debating between has a HUGE sense of community, theres the typical college experience. I want to know if it's really like being dropped in the middle of the city like a grown up? Or are there friendly people around who want to get to know you because we're all a part of NYU, who are willing to hang out, study together, help you out (or eachother), and that kind of stuff.

Washington square is like NYUville. Its the village, and all the bohemians are kind. I have found there to be a sense of community around the square, obviously with students--but its not difficult to create a rapport with someone you have never met before. Its NYC--something like 16 million people live here, in a few hundred(or thousand?) square miles.

in my experiences, the image of the typical NYU student as some trust fund baby, complete with blue-blood holier than thou attitude is completely false. yes these people exist, and im sure they attend NYU; but again, the full spectrum is here, super rich to poor. Arrogance reaches all 4 corners of the globe.

Alot of people who go to NYU are smart middle class kids from around the nation and the world. most cant afford it without SOME kind of aid. The typical NYU student is a driven, highly intelligent young adult, with killer loans to pay off.

thanks matt1282

do most NYU students go out into "the city" (in quotes becasue Washington Sq. is already part of the city) as in uptown, midtown, other parts of Manhattan other than NYUville is what I mean. Or do most students stay on/near campus? Also I visited during the time when school was in session and it just seemed very empty. I mean I was there when classes were dismissed. why does it seem empty of students? do students go off somewhere?

glad to give all info i can, i live in NYC.
dying2live129 if you wanna chat

bump. anyone else?

If you went during spring break or summer vacation, I'm not surprised that it seemed empty - most kids have gone home and have no need to be on campus :) But yes, lots of people stick around the East Village most of the time, but you'll find NYU students everywhere.
