I’m a poet and writer. My work is considered very good by family, friends, and my HS English teacher (as well as several other teachers.) However, I am not published, apart from online.
I sent in a short story (~700 words) and 2 or 3 poems to Wesleyan, Kenyon, Macalester, Colby, and Clark. I’m applying as a film major with Biology as my second choice, except at Mac.
Would anyone mind skimming through my submissions and telling me if they give me an advantage? It’s all good writing, but I’m worried it’ll bog down my application. Thank you!
It depends on the individual college’s policy. If they pass on submissions to the English or creative writing departments, your work probably needs to be of higher quality. If they keep it within admissions and simply consider if from a layman’s perspective, it could hold less weight. Either way, my advice is to trust yourself. If you think it’s good writing and your teachers agree, I would feel confident with your submission.
You’re applying as a film major (where writing is going to be required) so at least creative writing is related to your major. If the schools look at extra materials it may help, but if they don’t I think they’ll just set them aside. I don’t think they’ll count against you.
If you already sent in the supplement, I don’t see the advantage of asking people to critique it now.
Just let it go and think about other things. Good luck!
