Does anyone know when placement tests are taken? …before orientation or just during orientation?

For languages? Modern languages have their placement exam info here:

[Modern Languages & Cultures](http://www.rochester.edu/college/mlc/placement)

Most other departments require either an AP or IB score or college credits (from high school co-enrollment, for example) for advanced placement/credit.

[Advanced Placement Credit : Center for Academic Support](Advanced Placement : Advising Handbook : College Center for Advising Services : University of Rochester)

If you want to challenge (take a higher level math class without having AP/IB credit, for example), you’ll need to get permission from your advisor/ the freshman advisor for the dept where you want to challenge (e.g. math dept for math classes) during freshman orientation.

I don’t think UR gives traditional placement exams like some public unis do.

BTW, it’s almost impossible to place out of freshman writing. Info here:

[Satisfying the Primary Writing Requirement : College Writing Program : University of Rochester](Primary Writing Requirement : Undergraduate : Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program : University of Rochester)

At best, you’ll be allowed to substitute another writing intensive class for WRT 105. But you are still required to complete TWO writing [intensive] classes to fulfill graduation requirements. Students with double majors may be required to take a upper level writing intensive class for each major. I know D2 did.
