Sentence Ligaments

Just a question about sentence structure: Since ; can connect seperate clauses, couldn't I write a supersentence such as:

The dog barked, and the cat ran away; the girl quickly ran back, and she asked her mother about the dog; ...

Is this simply stylistically flawed? Is it grammatically correct to connect two 4 seperate clauses by connecting 2 sentences each with 2 clauses connected by comma with a semicolon?

Technically you can, but it's generally not appropriate. A sentence usually deals with one action or an action and a result. Otherwise you could combine an unlimited number of clauses! Of course, some writers (like Virginia Woolf and Hawthorne) create paragraph-long sentences anyway, but that fits their styles.

yeah...i agree with you...i hate hawthorne for making his sentence get so long cause i lose train of though sometimes. But I enjoy his writing in other ways.
