SEO Phone Interview

So I applied to the first round of SEO, and I got a phone interview. What should I expect? I'm shocked I got this with my 3.2 GPA, but I want to make the most of it. What will the phone interview be like?

Thanks

Which division did you apply for?
I know some ppl (asset management) have got interviews.
Personally I have applied for investment banking, but haven't got any interview yet.

I applied to Investment Banking-Research.

Congrats Haas....I'll be waiting/hoping for a phone interview.....I'm not too sure about IB-Research but I remember last year I was asked some questions regarding the current prices on a few commodities. So be sure to be up to date with the key indexes in the stock market.

I applied just before the due date on Nov 1. Does anyone know by what date we will get invites for a phone interview or rejection?

you should receive notice by january of either rejection or waitlist. If you are a stellar applicant, you should receive a call for an interview within 2-3weeks of submitting an application.

Good luck.

HopefullyHaas. Congrats for the phone interview. I also got one too also for IB Research! Good stuff. I am nervous as hell, right now and I am about to sign up for a time slot. Lets keep each other posted.

Hi guys, do you know if they wait until January to notify those that have been accepted along with the rejected and waitlisted ones or do they notify accepted applicants soon after their interviews?

Usually accepted applicants are notified immediately; ie phone interviews then inperson. that's what happened last year.

I honestly think the INROADS program is much better. Although, INROADS does not focus specifically in the different areas of investment banking, there are tons of banking jobs if you're willing to give a little leeway. The difference between SEO and INROADS is that there's a wider range of jobs. INROADS places hundreds if not thousands of interns into BIG4 accounting firms also. INROADS also offers courses in almost all areas of finance to supplement your internships.

For anyone applying to SEO; I recommend you also apply to inroads.org

Thanks JPNguyen. Are phone interviews as intense as in-person interviews? How long do they generally last? Thanks in advance.

Hi guys, My seo phone interview last year was even more intense than in person, because you don't receive the usual visual signals that tell you if you are messing up or not - so on the phone it is really tricky. I think its good to prepare as much as you would normally - dressing up too! Tha apparently helps. Phone interviews are 15-20 minutes long...

I agree tmangono,

I HATE phone interviews. So much harder than in person.

Thanks guys. If you wouldn't mind, could you tell us in brief what kind of technical/quantitative questions we should expect?

By the way, has anyone who is applying for Corporate Finance got a phone interview?

Yeah, what can we expect from the phone interview? My buddy who did it last year said it'll just be asking you about markets...

I applied for corp finance and got a phone interview

this is my first phone interview do anybody know what kind of questions to expect

I got an interview with corp finance

Can someone just answer the dogone question?

I made a few graduation date and spring exam mistakes on the application. I have not heard back at all...could this be the reason?

Hey guys, just like you guys I did some research and found out about SEO. I applied for the Nov 1 deadline and was selected by them for a phone screen. Me being as excited as I was, I went online almost immediately after being notified and registered for a phone screen slot. It was today, as in just now from 1:30-1:45. Before the phone interview, I came online just like you to this and other CC threads to find out what type of questions would be asked. I didn't really find anything as specific as what I was looking for. So I more along the lines prepared just with General Investment Banking stuff, but that interview blew me out the water. Fyi, I am currently in process of the Goldman Sachs Operations Division Summer 2009 internship selection. My Goldman Sachs first round interview was easier to me, than that phone screen! So, instead of me feeling sulky about my expected failure, I'm going to help you guys out. Lucky for you guys, I wrote down the questions as I was interviewing. Here's my info:
I go to SUNY Binghamton.
Sophomore
I have almost a 3.6 GPA.
I'm a Psychology major, business minor. I have a keen interest in Management and Organizational Behavior, more specifically Leadership and Consulting. I also really like IB-Corporate Finance. So I applied. My phone interviewer seemed to be very serious. She didn't give me any feedback after a question she just went on and there were so many awkwardly silent pause moments.

Here's what she asked and what we did:
Tell me about yourself and each of your extracurriculars.
How'd you hear about SEO, and what influenced your decision to apply?
Why do you like the area that you've chosen?
How does the subfield you've chosen contribute to what you want to do in the future?
Why SEO?
What do you think is the main difference between applying to SEO for placement with one of their Corporate Sponsors and applying to the company itself?
What do you feel about working and traveling in the NYC region?

After the first question, she goes "Do you have any leadership in your extracurriculars that you've mentioned?"

Hope it helps! I know that SEO is like out of the question lol but Pray for me! I really want Goldman!
